Hello, I'm with virgin and on the 4mg package with a lynksys wired router. Can anyone tell me why my PC keeps loosing the connection? I will be browsing as normal and suddenly get 'server not found' and it will remaim that way for 10 or so min before starting to work again.

Any help would be great as it's starting to get on my nerves and i never had this problem before i joined vm

thanks
paul

i'd recommend your first test should be removing the router so the modem is direct to pc and see if issues continue occuring.
then you'll have a better idea straight away whats the cause of the issue.
if the issues continue go to 192.168.100.1
and post results here and may be able to see some issue on that

As suggested, I'd remove your router firstly.
You could also post your modem stats here so we can take a look at them for you.
Downstream power and SNR.
And upstream power.
The make & model of your modem would be quite useful too.

what?

also downstream frequency. quite guilty of causing connection drops, particularly on webstar cm's.

---------- Post added at 15:17 ---------- Previous post was at 15:15 ----------

also the downstream frequency.

who was it you were with before and is it a new router you have?

hi, thaks for the replies.
the problem is intermittent, as are all pain in the **** problems so i will try removing the router the next time i am suffering.

my modem stats are as follows:
WebSTAR EPC2100R2

Modem Serial Number
210053809

Cable Modem MAC Address
EDIT: REMOVED

Hardware Version
2.1

Software Version
v2.0.2r1256-060303

Receive Power Level
6.3 dBmV

Transmit Power Level
44.0 dBmV

Cable Modem Status
Operational

I hope this means something to you guys cus it doesn't to me lol

The router is a linksys wireless G with speed booster model WRT54GS, but as i said i connect through an ethernet cable and the wireless antennea is turned off in the routers configuration.

I was adsl with BT before moving to VM about 6 months ago. I have had this problem on and off since joining VM. I get 'server not found' or 'unable to connect' in my browser when trying to go to the next page. also msn occasionally disconnects at the same time.

You should edit out your Modem MAC ASAP.

Also the info on the signal page would be handy particularly the downstream frequency.

Also when the connection drops can you still access that page? Or your router config page?

As above. Posting your MAC address on the forum isn't the best idea.

paul97
30-03-2008, 19:10
thanks for that as you can tell i am a bit of a muppet at this kind of thing

---------- Post added at 19:10 ---------- Previous post was at 18:57 ----------

signal page is as follows:

Downstream Status
Operational

Downstream Frequency
331000000 Hz

Modulation
256QAM

Bit Rate
4096000 bits/sec

Power Level
8.0 dBmV

Signal to Noise Ratio
41.1 dB

Upstream Channel
The data shown in the table below provides information about the signal being transmitted to the network from your cable modem.

Upstream Status
Operational

Upstream Frequency
29200000 Hz

Modulation
16QAM

Bit Rate
384000 bits/sec

Power Level
41.5 dBmV

I can go back to the previous page and i think i can still get on to the router config just can't view any new pages. Keep trying and eventually it will go to the new page.

Should I be worried about my little oversight with the mac address? can I change it to restore my security?

out of the frying pan.......lol

all info there looks spot on tbh.

i would really advised connecting direct to your pc, b4 it disconnects again, as when it disconnect you would need to reboot the modem to it to recognise its plugged into a new device .which would mean you wouldnt then need to wait again.

connect direct, leave it that way for as long as it takes for you to be confident that its not gona drop, or until it does drop.

I used to have a LOT of problems with Linksys routers not being able to handle heavy load....

Now I have a lovely Netgear WGT624v3 and everything is fine :)

A cookie might prevent you from accessing a particular website but it's highly unlikely that it would drop your connection.
Sometimes clearing your browser's cache (found under Tools/Options/Advanced/Network in Firefox) will enable you to reconnect.

If that doesn't sort out your problems, I'd recommend you have a read of Annie's excellent Broadband FAQ (http://a.myby.co.uk/broadband-faq.html).

what?
31-03-2008, 21:03
was that with direct or router connection.
that really is the easiest way to find out where te issue is coming from if you haven't tried it. if it disconnect when direct good chance of network issue possibly snr related.

have you tried any pings while it disconnected to see if you recieve any packets?

to do that you go to start then run.
type into the box cmd and press enter
in the black dos box type "ping bbc.co.uk"
when it show up it will say
packets sent 4 recieved - lost -
repeat test for "ping 212.58.224.86" (bbc ip)
then "ping 192.168.100.1" (modem)

Ok then seen as my new thread was closed lets type it all out again. lol

hello all.

unfortunately no further on!

I need help. I am on the 4mg packege with virgin in Birmingham. I am connecting direct through a brand new modem supplied by virgin to try to solve this problem.

The connection is fine and then when you try to navigate to a new page it my pc displays server not found or cannot connect. I have tried with both IE and fire fox with the same results.

The same thing also happends when I am playing my PS3 online. The connection will just drop and i will be unable to connect to playstation online.

I have watched my modem while the problem occurs. everything is fine, pc, send, and recieve light flashing then the recieve light goes dead and the connection is lost. the pc and send light continue to flash.

A power cycle sometimes clears the problem but not always.

HELP PLEASE!!!!!!!

regards
paul

Have you tried replacing the ethernet cable with a new one - its possible it's dodgy.
When your connection goes off, can you ping or traceroute anywhere, eg www.bbc.co.uk

paul97
07-07-2008, 09:52
ok tried the ping thing just now while it was down. this is with my router plugged back in though.

www.bbc.com = could not find host
192.168.100.1 = 4 sent 4 lost

on another topic were you on battlefield last nighy jaycee? i recognise the name?

jaycee

I don't play online games, so no :)

OK, does the ethernet light on the modem stay on?

paul97

yep, the ethernet light and the send light are on when the problem occurs, the recieve light goes dead

Hmm... a Webstar. I seem to remember these being flaky.
When your connection goes off, ring tech support and tell them you cannot get any service. If the only way to restore is to reboot your modem they should see the modem reconnecting a lot and send an engineer out. Hopefully he'll junk the Webstar and replace it with an Ambit 255.

paul97
07-07-2008, 12:30
I rang the tech guys last week and they were very helpfull. We went through several things and they came to the conclusion that i need a new modem. they sent me an ambit 256 which is what i am using now. there seems to be little difference in my problem though unfortunately. if anything i would say the problem clears quicker now than before but it still drops the connection. I think i will have to phone them again this afternoon?

That traceroute now looks fine so I'd recommend you leave the router disconnected for a while until you're convinced that your connection is working okay. If you still get "server not found" type errors, do another traceroute and copy it back here again.

If you have no problems while connected directly to the modem, it would suggest that the problem lies with your equipment and is nothing to do with VM.
To troubleshoot that, I'd recommend you try adding your router (without the PS3) and see if it stays stable but don't forget to go through the same power-down routine!
If that seems to be okay, try adding your PS3 back to the network and test again.

Good luck!

I have already experienced the problem without the router, going direct through the new modem. My ps3 is turned off except for when i am using it so don't think that can be causing the problem. I will leave the pc connected direct and when it happens again ill do the traceroute thing. problem is that it comes and goes.

I am open to the idea that it could be my router or pc causing the problem i just need to nail it down so that i can get it sorted.

don't think its my pc as i get the same problem with my ps3 when the pc is switched off (through th router).
don't think it's my router cus as i say it has happened while connected direct.......?
thanks for sparing the time to help
