Hi Guys,

Just spoke with Tech Support, they said nothing is wrong. Should have 4 getting speed tests of around 2.9 - 3.1mb

Don't use speedtests, try downloading a large file from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com then see your speed. IT should max at almost 500kb/s. :)

Yeah tried this withthe Virgin Tech - got around 191kbps

Ping time averagesaround 48 - 60 MS

Is 500kb/s around 4 mb ? I was maxing out at 500 kb/s on 20 mb :(, Other speed tests show my download constantly around 4/5 mb anytime of day/night. Must remember to do more tests later on :sleep:

To find the maximum data rate, divide your service by 8.

For example, 20Mb is 1024 x 20, which is: 20480

Now, take 20480 and / by 8: 20480 / 8 = 2560.

So, your max speed is 2560kB/s

For 10Mb it's 1280kB/s
For 4Mb it's 512kB/s
For 2Mb It's 256kB/s
For 1Mb it's 128kB/s

And so on and so forth. Don't forget overheads on the line though etc... So, allow anything upto 7% or so, that's what i normally do :)

Just tried this myself (using that site - thanks).

Supposed to be on a 4mb service and was getting a download speed of 188 -> 192 kb/s. What does that equate to ? EDIT: Ah, you've shown the conversion above...meaning my supposed 4mb service is somewhere between 1mb and 2mb. Wonderful.

My service has been appalling recently (2 / 3 weeks) on both TV and broadband. Broadband keeps pausing and the speed has been SLOW (also been kicking me off the PS3 network alot mid CoD4 games). TV has been losing its signal causing the V+ box light to blink (indicating signal loss) and losing all picture. And then coming back.

Most annoying.

My connectionisn't half bad - since speak to the tech Support - its been going at around 491KBPS the 2nd at 232kbps & the 3rd around 191kbps.

Yeah - according to the Tech they dont take note of speed tests as they are "off network"

Just tried that site..got a MASSIVE 70KB/s !!! :mad:

EDIT: Just tried the previously given site again too ... and got the same speed - around 70KB/s ... oh joy !

Try using FDM. It takes away all the things that can cause a browsers download speed to decrease.

FDM is Free Download Manager, i always get 2400/2500kb/s on 20meg on these from large files @ ftp.virginmedia.com

speedtest gets me about 14meg-16meg max :\

thanks for that, also shows im not getting any where near my maximum potential ( also I am way clear of the 7% leway) only getting 500 kb max downloading those files, other speed tests show my upload is around normal at 715 though which throws the conclusion I may have been accidently moved to 4mb or even capped. Gonna do some more tests tomorow and see, ( note: had about max 4mb for over over 4 weeks with 20mb)

I've got a download manager, but I wanted to try a direct windows controlled download to see what rate I'm getting.

The performance of my 4mb internet connection has been shocking for the past 2 or 3 weeks, and I seem to be getting a max of 1mb broadband.

My PS3 keeps disconnecting me from the PS3 network - meaning online gaming is becoming a waste of time.

Not overly happy at the moment.
