For the past say week, iv'e experience huge problems with my 2MB DSL broadband. Ran a test on speedtest.net...

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2008/03/62.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

The effects it causes for online games are "intense" and makes them not impossible to play but very irritating.

I had similar problems like this when I first went from 1mb DSL broadband from NTL contract to VM 's 2MB for a few weeks, but slowly got better and wasn't to much of an issue.

Now, it seems it's reverting back to old ways, or is there issues in the derby area?

Can anyone help?

It really does sometimes get on my ****ing nerves, makes playing online games un-enjoyable.

Although the speed does seem to be OK, it's the ping times i'm on about.

It's NEVER anything below 50ms ffs!

It has to be the area im living in. I recon signal for thr connection isn't been properly set-up. Although, im not a cable tech. so i'm not overly sure.

When the techs finally come out after spending **** load of time on the phone, they don't (want?) to do anything and quote "Looks fine to me".

What a load of bollox!

Call the internet police, you're only getting half of your speed! I get less than 10% of the speed I pay for, try that on for size!

Well....I am currently in Derby and I have to say that the internet connection here is terrible. Right now (approx 7:10) Im getting pings jumping up over 100ms to any uk server and I cant download faster than 200Kb/s. Funny that Im on 20mbit..... We have phone VM many times and I think a total of 4 engineers have been to our house all having different stories each time (oh your signal is too low, let me boost it for you....Oh Derby will undergo maintenance soon....and even one guy saying that pings like this were acceptable and that a ping to my router of <1ms meant that my router was broken?!?!? IDIOT!!!!) Well the last thing we heard was that they would drop our price down to the 2mbit until the beginning of march as they were doing network upgrades in Derby in February but he said that it was only penciled in... Well now its mid march nothing has been done.... and I really dont want to phone up for a 6th time!

There is truth in what the engineer's are saying, through human sources off this forum, derby is getting a full work over which should improve everything.

I have been told this is happening in the first 2 weeks in April.

Fingers Crossed!

Yeah fingers crossed! Lets hope its not just a 'pencil in' again.... I don't think I will ever phone VM customer support again. Everytime they keep asking me to do the stupid checks on the computer and pretty much just ignore what I say on the phone. Still, roll on April!

Couldn't agree more. Phone up and get connected to someone in india and all they want to do is for you to do self tests or say "Looks fine our end". I would then be like, *******s is it fine! The reason why I am ringing is because it's not fine

But yes, I am hoping in April they will sort it out for us Derbians :p:

Mines the same in Derby. on 20mb. its been bascially rock steady 20mb 95% of the time since 20mb came out.

Been on 4mb down, 0.7 up for last 2 days, lots of latency issues to go along with it.

Guess it's not just me then in Derby. Should'v e come here first would've saved me a few minutes unplugging my router/modem then pluging them all back in again in various configurations.

Looks like I'm capped at 4.5/5 mbit constantly and the upload speed really is p**spoor, nice of Virgin to let us know what they are doing. I bet they don't refund the days the service has been this poor, it's not as if you can even get a package from them this slow anymore at any rate.

That is a known issue and a fix is being worked on.

I have 20MB, I have been through a painful process with VM, but the guy that came to change my modem helped me out loads. He spoke to another engineer internally, they pumped up my Signal Strenth and then he found out then the UBR was so over subscribed he could was supprised I was able to use it at all (over suscribed by about 60% or something like that) so I have been moved on to a new UBR and HTTP downloads have gone from a max of 190K to about 1.9M now...... Ace!:)

Mine too, although it's fairly poor now again (between 8-10 mbps)

I'm in Derby, perfect connection 99% of the time & max ping of 50ms to London speed test.

Give VM a call, i had problems all the time the chap from Tech support moved me to UBR05.

He said the UBR's have a traffic light rating

Black = Over subscribed to hell
Red = Over subscribed
Amber = slightly over subscribed
Green = All good

UBR05 was Green the others were Amber, Red and even Black

TBH i don't know VM's network inside out so this could have been a load of bull but it seemed to work!

PS I spoke to UK Tech support not India who just tell you to unplug wait 30 seconds etc...!!!

I am getting lost packets in the Virginmedia network, no doubt this is the cause of the problem, but when I can finally get virginmedia.com to load up there is nothing in the status report about the issue.

Well, after seemingly recovering, my connection has gone down the toilet today and like IanR, I can barely get pages to load. I called virgin and they told me there is a serious problem in the DE21 and DE24 areas which should be resolved within 24 hours. Would be nice if this was reflected on the service status page.

I rang them up, Derby area is having problems and should be resolved in the next 24hrs. It's taken me nearly all night to register and post this! AFAIK their site isn't updated, it wasn't at 7pm anyway. Nor was their telephone message and the call handler didn't know - however they do know as of around 7pm.

My 20mb in Derby (de24) has been on worse than dialup speeds since Sunday morning. Last night it would connect but got timeout errors everytime. A little better this morning, but still struggling to load even Google. Gave them a ring and went through the usual steps, even though i had told them i had already done them. They then tell me that there is a problem im my area but they will also send my out a new modem?? I have the ntl:250 is there a new version out?

*sloman*
06-04-2009, 10:55
Yeah Ambit 256 (Black VM branded one) you have the blue (NTL branded one)

No difference accept ambit 256 has no USB and is black.

I am in DE22 area my BB was fine last night, ask for a reduction in your bill if your not getting the speeds you are paying for!

I pay £20 for 20MB package
