just got 20 mb...terrible last night...great this morning

I have been with ntl for a while with the 1mb. Upgraded to 2mb. Went over to the 4mb about 4 months ago and decided to go onto the 20 mb a few days ago. What a bit of a nightmare. It has been pretty much consistently around the 2-4mb mark all the time in the evenings. Though the upload has been consistently over 700k. I rang the tech support who were (surprisingly) very helpful. They agreed to send an engineer out the next day (today) to see what the problem was. Somehow though this morning I managed to get 19,000 kbps. Though that was only once.

Which promptly dropped down to this not much after.

Nope but Maidenhead seems to be a rotten test site. I get near 20Mb downloading and using Paris on speedtest.net.

Speedtests are rubbish.

Try downloading an actual file from a newsgroup or any other server you know thats usually upto speed, and try more than one. Usually its because of crap test servers and i wouldnt base your connection being slow just because of what one server says.

Fair points. I did try many sites and download sites and it was very similar.

And this was similar on many sites. Oh well. The guy is coming today, Xboxlive on my xbox 360 is much better I notied. Wonder if it is my computer? The tech woman said there was a fault with my modem and that I wouldn't get charged for the call. I have been more than happy with the service I have received from virgin up to now. I hope it continues!

Just got the call from the engineer (who I asked not to come this time!) he said that there have been a lot of mac(?) address migrating (or something) in the North Manchester area (for anyone else that lives up here). Sorry for not understanding. I am not computer illiterate but poor when it comes networking/internet terms. Thanks for the comments.
