View Full Version : Am I being throttled in Stafford?
Hi
I hope someone who knows about this stuff can help me out.
I dont download huge amounts but might download around 2-5gb a week on average. I am currently on the 4Mb package
I am finding that up until about 4pm i can download at full whack (about 480KB/s) but then it almost immediately drops to about 116KB/s and it stays that way until just after midnight at which point its back at around 400KB/s again.
Is there some kind of throttling taking place because it happened every day for the last 3-4 weeks. I cant believe that everyone suddenly logs on and starts downloading at 4pm every day dropping it to EXACTLY 116KB/s because of traffic
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
Ben
Its doing exactly the same for me im on the 4mb package (480kbs) and being throttled down to less than a 1mb connection (116kbs) after a short while of downloading when its supposed to be throttled down to 2mb (250kbs) according to the stm guides. this is in Warrington.

They have changed the STM rules read here (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/internet/traffic.html) for more info and too both of you YES you are been stm'd

1st 512K took 4500 ms = 113.8 KB/sec, approx 938 Kbps, 0.92 Mbps
2nd 512K took 5172 ms = 99 KB/sec, approx 816 Kbps, 0.8 Mbps
3rd 512K took 8188 ms = 62.5 KB/sec, approx 515 Kbps, 0.5 Mbps
4th 512K took 4828 ms = 106 KB/sec, approx 873 Kbps, 0.85 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 786 Kbps, 0.77 Mbps
Download transfer rate pans out at about 0.84 Meg
Any national issues?? I'm in Swansea which is pretty good normally
Checked the modem log nothing showing if I'm being throttled and I've not given them a reason to either
Checked the modem log again looks like it had a software upgrade about 9.38pm
Well....I never knew about that policy at all. Thanks for putting me in the picture.
Now I come to think of it the only time where I would've noticed it would be when I was downloading files and probably over the STM limit
Ah well at least I know my connection isnt borked :)
I'll keep my downloads to off peak times if I want them quickly
Thanks
Ben
Ho hum
Back to normal

Good god, some people download 3 gig, the world will stop :-( I am downloading a new map for my Tom-Tom 900 unit, the map is 1844 meg and as I am on the 2meg "service" I have now been capped. Crazy stuff.
I am finding that up until about 4pm i can download at full whack (about 480KB/s) but then it almost immediately drops to about 116KB/s and it stays that way until just after midnight at which point its back at around 400KB/s again.
If you hit the limit just after 4PM, the traffic shaping should stop just after 9PM, which is outside of the peak times so your speeds should be normal from that point on. It shouldn't go on until midnight, unless you're not hitting the limit until around 7PM. As the peak time is a period of 5 hours and traffic shaping lasts for 5 hours, you can't get limited more than once per day, so if you are being limited from 4PM to midnight, there might be a problem somewhere.
I don't get back from work until 6pm most days so probably wouldnt hit the cap 'til later. I'm off this week and noticed the 4pm start. I've noticed the 12pm finish at other times and just assumed it was 4pm-midnight.
At least I'm aware of it now.
Did I miss a mail about this policy btw? I bet customer services get a lot of calls from people like me who were unaware.
