You sure it's not just oversubscription? Here's my "20Mb" connection during prime time:

Sun, 10 Feb 2008 18:19:35 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 3138 ms = 326.3 KB/sec, approx 2689 Kbps, 2.63 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 6494 ms = 157.7 KB/sec, approx 1299 Kbps, 1.27 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 3506 ms = 292.1 KB/sec, approx 2407 Kbps, 2.35 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 6696 ms = 305.9 KB/sec, approx 2521 Kbps, 2.46 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 2229 Kbps, 2.18 Mbps

Terrible speeds you got there mate.

I could'nt even get 1mb 90% of the time out of a 10 mb connection so i'm dreading the upgrade tbh.

4 mb has pretty much been rock solid for years until last sunday though.

My upload rate keeps dropping to as low as 28 kB/s early Am hours and now they are blatantly introducing STM capping to 1mb/128k bang on 4pm.

Capping me between the hours of 4pm and 9pm if i dl/ul 800mb/325mb is simply not happening.

They are just flat out capping me at 4pm.

It's not a speed issue and my speeds are not irratic.

As soon as it hit 4pm they hit with STM for no reason whatsoever.

Since 4pm i've been bang on 1mb/128k without even downloading or uoloading a single bit of data.

WTF happened to 800mb dl 325 mb ul rules all of a sudden? :td:

Nemeth, i know what you mean. My 20Mb connection had become so bad i decided to cancel everything as VM state there is no issue,it is always the same thing, spyware, viruses or even "you are downloading too much" even though im not!

I dread what the UBRs will be like with all the ugrades from 4mb to 10mb.

Best bet mate would be to get an engineer booked for as close to 4pm as possible, then say "see, how could I have downloaded 800MB while you have been here a few minutes, this IS STM, now I want you to call up your bosses and get this sorted out, PRONTO!!!"

TBH, this is the best thing you can do, as the engineer should know these things!

I have a similar question in the support area of the newsgroup about the STM and the 800mb/325mg download/upload. I also have been getting STM even though I havnt hit the limits in the stated times.

If you read the VM STM page it states...
Any users hitting this amount during peak times (4pm till 9pm) will have their broadband speed temporarily traffic managed

They state DURING peak times, so does that means if you dont hit the limits between 4-9 pm. you shouldnt get STM`d?

Also, they state..
So, unless you're using an unusually large amount of information at peak times, we won't restrict your service and you can use to your heart's content

I try to do all my d/loading (if I have to do any) at off peak times, I usually do it when Im sleeping and leave my pc on overnight and try to be fair, and yet still get punished by the so called FAIR useage policy.

STM working as it should on my 4Mb connection in Andover. To test I downloaded approx 1 GB yesterday afternoon starting just before 16:00 it ran at 480-490KB DL & approx 10KB UL for about 27 mins then dropped to a stable 120KB DL & approx 5 KB UL monitored using BitMeter.

No problems today for me.

I'm expecting VM to change their STM policy yet again though because 2 sundays in a row they've lowered my conection to 1mb/128k from 4-9pm, bang on time.

As soon as the clock struck 9pm last night i was back at full seed.

As much as i admire your advice, but the service Tech ringing his line manager is going to get no where fast. IF there are problems with the installation then the service Tech can resolve this, IF there is congestion on his port on the UBR, he or his manager or his Head of Department will not be able to do anything to resolve that issue. There is certain criteria that has to be met before certain types of upgrade will take place. Which are taking place at present in the areas that have been highlighted by this criteria.

Is this affecting everyone, I'm on 2MB download, and suddenly by surfing speed has dropped to 82kbps, everything seems so slow - almost like the old dial-up days. I don't download much stuff.

BUT with all due respect, at least its a positive move forward, I mean, bitching about it here aint gonna get it sorted out..

IF TS cant do anything (OR as usual they have the brains of a retarded pea) then maybe escalate the matter further, even by calling to retentions and telling them that if it dont get sorted out then you will leave, at least there are still records of the complaint (UNLESS they do a wee sneaky bit & not input the notes, as has happened more times than not to me)

What do you mean by bitching?

Like i have said, you can ring retentions as much as you like, unless the criteria has been met then no upgrades will be done. Obviously complaining to the correct department will help. Unfortunately as much as i would like the earth to move when anyone complains,it just wont happen just because you say, "you will leave".

Obviously by calling the VM staff who frequent this site is also going to get you no where fast. your one of those people,( im guessing here) who thinks that shouting and making threats down the phone is going to get things done quickly.

No not at all!!

My long time MSN friend has her bro down that works in VM Sheffield, and I was just talking generally, and he actually said he'd look into my account(s) and see if anything can be tweaked, I thought he mean to sort the confusing bill out or my problems with speed, but then he calls me up from work to tell me he's put me on a retensions deal, didnt ask for it, but certainly grateful for such, so without cost of phone calls (when any apply) the total cost of a months' bill is no more than £40 for XL phone, XL TV & Sky Sports 1&3 & 20Mb broadband, not bad really!

Oh, plus as I have had nothing but problems from my connection, I only pay £25 a month for my 20Mb internet, but I have cancelled my residential service as the 10Mb business line is way more stable AND I actually get the speed Im paying for!!!

Roll on the 20Mb upgrade to the business service!! :)

Hi, my first experience of capping today, was watching the Carling Cup Final on the PC, Chelsea v Spurs, near the end of the second period of extra time, lost it, would not play ect / download/ buffer, that was around 6pm, checked my 4 meg speed, damn 967kbps , still the same now.

crazy !!!

Here's my original thread about this. http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33628361-two-sundays-in-a-row-now.html

They did it AGAIN yesterday.

They are like clockwork now.

Every second sunday at 16:00 they cap my connection for 5 hours to 1mb dl/128k ul.

They are breaking their own STM policy.

Grrr. There's not much point reporting it today!
:-)

I'll be banking on you to be poised ready with speed tests and multiple file downloads at 4:01 on Sunday the 23rd.
I can't wait to read Tech Support's response to you asking if you'd been STM'd at 4:05!
(Putting it in my diary now.)

They've capped my speed today to 5Mb/s from 20Mb/s and I am positive I did not hit either the upload or download limits. The only thing I downloaded was about 20 minutes ago and I was surprised to see it wasn't going at full speed.
I did speed tests to confirm it; I've been wrongly STM'd :(
Usually I get top speed ALL the time and the speed tests are exactly at 5Mb/s so it can't be anything else.

ceedee
10-03-2008, 21:33
Fwiw, apparently a "foolproof" way to confirm you've been STM'd is to check your *upload* speed rather than the download.

Alternatively you could ask the Tech Support crew in their dedicated newsgroup who seem more than happy to confirm or deny such requests.

Ah, the sneaky boogers! They caught us out by skipping a Sunday!
;)

If you're sure you've downloaded well under the STM limit, it's probably worth contacting TS to get them to get the UBR checked?

Whereabouts in the country are you? (Just the first part of your postcode)
If you're in Preston, then you may as well get used to it -- that's where it has been confirmed that VM are 'trialling' new STM limits/hours (nobody knows what!).
But there have also been bouts of STM-ularity (as in 'irregular' STM sessions) confirmed in TA5, OL4 and NE8.

And the *one* surefire way of confirming for yourself that you're being STM'd is to check your upload speed -- it should be 128kB/s for M or L, and 192kB/s for XL.
