VM more than double your d/l speed for free and you are still reserved about the service they provide you? I hope you don't win the rollover lottery, the pot won't have enough cash for you.

Really, really, really....DON'T go to Pipex.

They have been bought by Tiscali. Their customers are about to go onto Tiscali's network, and ALL customer service and tech support is going to India.

For the love of God, don't do it. Pull out now before it's too late.

If you're heading back to ADSL, could I recommend that you check out Pipex before you make the jump?
They're barely recognisable as the same company any more.

Since the takeover and rapid incorporation into the Tiscali network (in particular their LLU setup), people are far from happy and, if the ThinkBroadband forums are anything to go by, are leaving in droves.

ymmv

To check go to the modem config page - Type 192.168.100.1 into th address bar and enter 'root' as the username and password. Then go to operation config and it should say 10240000 under Maximum Downstream Data Rate (download).

Cheers buddy, I went to the modem config page, no login details required and the options were:

System/Signal/Status/Log

Under Signal I found:

Downstream Status - Operational
Channel ID - 4
Downstream Frequency - 331000000 Hz
Modulation - 256QAM
Bit Rate - 4096000 bits/sec
Power Level - 6.8 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio - 39.9 dB

Upstream Status - Operational
Channel ID - 4
Upstream Frequency - 37500000 Hz
Modulation - 16QAM
Bit Rate - 384000 bits/sec
Power Level - 44.0 dBmV

Would that mean I'm still on 4mb?

Just download something from VM's ftp server (ftp://ftp.virginmedia.com/) (or any large files from VM's newsgroups (http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/newsgroups/setting-up.php)) and check the speed you get.
In both cases, using a multi-threaded client will usually improve your download rate.

It sounds like the roll-out is (maybe) only just beginning so I wouldn't hold your breath for at least another couple of months.

Just wondering did you use speed test.net, as for the last few weeks I've been averaging 10-18Mb from them on my 4Mb connection with no increase in upload. When I check with other speed tests 4Mb is the average.

What daily usage amount?...there isn't one.
There is an amount that,if during the hours of 4pm to 9pm,you go over they'll throttle your speed for 5 hours, but there's no daily or monthly allowance....d/load as much as you like.

If you exxceed ur limit upload or download ur speed is throttled capped cut whatever u wanna call it for 5 hrs this is between 4 - 9pm if you dont go over ur limit then from 9pm DOWNLOAD AND UPLOAD as you wish

Sorry mate I didn't phrase it like that, I know what traffic shaping is. My first question was what does Web-junkies post mean? And secondly I thought the shaping was enforced until midnight not 9pm?

xspeedyx
10-02-2008, 10:22
When STM was introduced yes it was till midnight but lately they changed the timeslots to between 4pm and 9pm and included upload and ur speed is not capped for 5hrs this is the whole new stm policy check this link for all the info.

But...
Sun, 10 Feb 2008 11:12:58 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 130 ms = 7876.9 KB/sec, approx 64906 Kbps, 63.38 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 999 ms = 1025 KB/sec, approx 8446 Kbps, 8.25 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 1749 ms = 585.5 KB/sec, approx 4825 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 6101 ms = 335.7 KB/sec, approx 2766 Kbps, 2.7 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 20236 Kbps, 19.76 Mbps

Mine via the above test.......any time, any day or weekends since November:)
But,from the upgrade in June till November was mini megs galore.

bertles86
10-02-2008, 12:56
My test from above showed:

Sun, 10 Feb 2008 12:51:21 UTC

Test 1: 1024K took 20469 ms = 50 KB/sec, approx 412 Kbps, 0.4 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 17156 ms = 59.7 KB/sec, approx 492 Kbps, 0.48 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 29734 ms = 34.4 KB/sec, approx 283 Kbps, 0.28 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 26328 ms = 77.8 KB/sec, approx 641 Kbps, 0.63 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 457 Kbps, 0.45 Mbps

Is this about right for 4mb because, it sure doesn't look like it!

Update: Just cancelled my cancellation. What can I say. A bit of speed and I'm anyone's :)

Interesting I was getting 10M, today only, I first noticed when my carefully tuned network monitor went off the scale! (so I cancelled my cancellation ),

however now I'm getting nothing, (so maybe that explains why the chap said mine seemed early and wasnt due until 26th Feb),

but then again there are gasworks right outside my door, and now the FTA TV signal has also gone. (So more likely gasworks I guess?)

If it was all some weird mistake, now the promise of a speed upgrade is finally here, I'll probably stick around.
Apart from about one outage a month the speed here (Bromley) is "as advertised".

i used various tests sites and all been around 8mb all weekend , speedtest.net is way wrong, it showed me double speeds, and some other sites showed me that i have 32mb connection :)

maybe false alarm
