i have a 4mb virgin broadband connection yet the highest download speed my internet does is 40kbs. Yet my friend who lives about 30metres away and has the same package as me, he does about 300kbs.
What you think the problem is? and what should i do?

Thanks in advanced!

Trish :D

tried the usual stuff like scanning for trojans, viruses and spyware etc?

It depends on the server you are connecting to; distance, line quality and above all, the specification of the server itself. If the server is only able to send data at 40KB/s, you wont get anything over that.

You goto www.download.com and download a file.

The file is 500Mb's

The server your downloading from is in Illinois, U.S.A

The Server is Medium Specification

Think about the distance and latency of the connection, your gonna download something faster from a server thats based in the uk than in america (as example)

And the main thing to think about is the upload speed of the person/server your downloading from, perhaps its only got 768k upload, you will only download at max speed the person can upload at.

download a large file from ftp.virginmedia.com and see what you get there.

Forget speedtest sites.

Which is basically just a repeat of what I said.

They all look fine bogusone.
Whats your QOS and would you please download this file and let me know the download speed please.
http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com/blueyondergames/b5ifh/ifhsetup.exe
Maybe even download two instances of it, so we can try and saturate your bandwidth.

I started the download at 325KB/S and then it settled at 139.79KB/S for a while and then dropped to 127KB/s I stopped it then with 30.24 time left remaining.

Maybe worth giving tech support a call or post on news.virginmedia.com
virginmedia.support.broadband.cable

*Could* be a issue with the uBR, FEC errors or high TX load causing slow speeds.

No no sorry. What I meant was that I didn't understand what "uBR, FEC errors or high TX load causing slow speeds" meant :)

i got alend of a modem off my friend. my internet increased up to 350kbs!!! which probably aint much to most of you's lol but its a big difference from gettin 40kbs, so the problem is with he modem. i phoned them up asking for a new one. and they asked me for my mac address at back of modem and said my speed should increase by tomarrow.

whys this?
