Hi all has this happened to any one on the forum.
I am on a 4mb line

Today (7/2/8) at 10:00am I started a large download (4.23 GB) It was split into 10 parts and downloaded each part with a download manager one at a time
It was downloading at about 522kB/sec which is about right for my modem
All was well till 1.00pm then the speed dropped to 121kB/sec and stayed there.
It looks to me like traffic shaping cutting in not at peak times.

With Thanks

i highly doubt it is traffic shaping, where are you getting the files from?

It is coming from the west coast USA.
Send and recive files every day.
The speed is to constant for it to be internet traffic.

Clearly it isn't, when you consider that the VM servers have returned results of a pretty consistent 1000Kb/s.

I have uploaded a file to my NTL web space.
It is 7.6M it uploaded at 14.5kB/sec took 8min 14 sec
Downloaded same file with download manager
At 111.20 kB/sec took 1min 5sec.
This is not the speed of a 4M Line
This is a man made block.

Isn't there a 3gb limit for downloading before STM kicks in?:confused:

Only between 4pm and midnight, if you believe VM

It's a 3GB limit for the 20Mb connection, he's on 4Mb. Even if he had gone over the limit, it shouldn't be kicking in at 1pm.

I don't have much sympathy, it's people like you who ruin connections for people like me!

Hmm you complain when your speeds are crap and yet you don't give a crap about others in your area suffering as long as your connection is ok!!

Let me guess you were downloading a linux iso!!!

hence why I said it could be slowing down

Slim at UN

Just to clarify it did not slow down. It did not fluctuate
It went from 522kB/sec to 121kB/sec
In mid download like a switch had been flicked
I use DU Meter and the line fell and went flat
from 522kB/sec to 121kB/sec.

Yes It was a big day.
Now before you all jump on the
You are downloading to much band wagon
I know it is a lot to download.
My point is this.
I do not download after 4.00pm at night.
Traffic Shaping is from 4-9 (or so it says)
My connection speed dropped at1.00 PM in the afternoon
I had downloaded 3.9gb at that time.

I was downloding a 4.35GB iso disk.
The file was split into 10 parts
9 parts of 450Mb and 1 part of the rest.

Comments (Go for it)

I am on 4Mb and do the occasional large download of over 1GB during the early afternoon and I've never experienced STM outside the alloted STM period.

As for the people who moan about your download activities, I don't see the problem as you're paying for the bandwidth, you're responsibly downloading outside the peak period and it's not as if you're trying to download the internet 24/7!

Incidentally I've just installed BitMeter and I'm absolutely amazed that I can easily top 100MB/hour usage just surfing around without any "proper" downloading!!!

Firstly what you download and how much is 100% your business. If you are causing other people's service to degrade because of your net usage, then it is VM's responsibility to take action, not for other people to judge, especially as they dont know what you are downloading.

It is possible that if you really are causing congestion your account could be managed outside of the STM time frame, but that would have to be done manually and the chances of it happening on a 4mb are nigh on impossible.

I would get in touch with tsc to see if there's anything going on their end that could have been causing it.

All very valid points. I have no problem with the Traffic shaping.
But let us have the rules of the game up front.
Not we will do what we want when we want to.
If I pay for a service Etc Etc
If The traffic shaping is 24-7 say so.
If you go over X Gb say so.
It is not rocket science.

Getting back into my pram now

i use DU meter, and like u i was amazed at how much i can just download and upload by just surfing, in less than 2hrs yesterday just chatting on MSN, Browsing, sending emails and looking on Youtube, i had downloaded over 300mb and uploaded 102mb

Virgin/Telewest/ntl have always been poor to the usa nothing new there (cant wait to see 50mb to the usa lol :D) you should try downloading from a eu mirror site or some eu test site at the hours you have problems, i said about 3 months ago that vm does something to your connection that bugs out about 12-1pm more evident at weekends.

And the age old download LIMITS remain still at unnaceptable levels imo vm it is now 2008 not 2001 years have passed lets get real and start thinking about a real level of service and support, bandwith on the home bb user has more than doubled in those years yet you seem to be going off download LIMITS which might even be considered harsh back in the 1mb top tier era.
