Can anyone tell me how to go about this without having to spend 15 minutes on hold!

Justr want to disable the 1571 answer machine please.

you can't. There is no way to disable the voicemail system. It is either on or off (via Customer Care)

Getting started
Setting up ntl Voicemail Plus

If you don’t set up a personal greeting, a standard greeting will be given. You’ll be given the option to record your name so when someone calls and leaves a message, the standard greeting will state this is your Voicemail system.

Checking for messages

If you have been left a message the dial tone you hear when
you pick up the phone will be stuttered. You then need to
enter the Voicemail system to pick up your messages. You
have the option to turn the stuttered message notification
on or off once you have listened to your messages.

Listening to messages when you’re away from home

There are two ways to listen to your messages when you are away from home:

1. Quick Dial
Dial your home telephone number
When you hear your message press. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Enter your 4 digit PIN & press . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Follow the instructions as normal

2. Direct Dial
Dial into the Voicemail system using your remote access number†
Enter the STD code without the first Zero, then the rest of your telephone number & press. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
Enter your 4 digit PIN & press . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
† To find out what your remote access number is dial 1571 from your ntl phoneline, key in your 4 digit PIN and then press 0. A prompt will tell you what your remote access number is. Please listen to your voicemail messages before connecting to
the Internet. Calls to remotely access the voicemail system will be charged at the standard rate. As a security measure 3 incorrect PIN entries will terminate the call.
Note: There is a monthly fee of just £1.75 for Voicemail Plus.


Free Voicemail

Is a free messaging service, which is a simplified version
of Voicemail Plus.

Getting Started
1. Contact Customer Services and ask for Free Voicemail,
they will arrange this for you.
2. Once you have Free Voicemail on your line, you access
the service by dialling 1571.
3. The first time you use this service, you will hear a short tutorial providing instructions. You will only hear this once.
4. Your calls will be automatically diverted to voicemail
when your phone is engaged or if you do not answer.

Checking for Messages
If you have been left a message you will hear an interrupted dial tone. Dial 1571 and follow instructions.
Your messages will be played automatically in date
and time order.

To save the message press . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .2
To delete the message press. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .3

Message Management

Saved messages will be stored for 3 days. After 3 days,
if the message is not resaved, it will be deleted.
You can save up to 10 messages at any one time.
Any unplayed messages will be stored for 21 days,
after which they will be deleted.
Please listen to your voicemail messages before connecting
to the internet

yup, but the old instructions are the only ones I can find online

If you cant disable it ,can you extend the amount of rings before it goes to VM as half the time I cant get to the phone before the recording starts.

I think you can only extend the rings on Voicemail Plus (ie by paying)
