Hi all my better half is currently 8 months pregnant and with the big day becoming ever nearer i thought it was time to invest in a newer digital camera. Which camera would you recomend for me to snap all those happy memories? i currently own a canon A60 which is ok but is getting a bit dated with only 2 mp it is a bit prehistoric. I would be glad to hear your recomendations.

All depends on the amount you are willing to spend. A ball park figure might help. :)

Check out http://www.dpreview.com/ for the latest reviews, also search this forum as there has been a number of threads about the same subject.

For £200 you should be able to pick up a decent camera for sure. As prices are always dropping.

some cameras are going down in price at the mo.

I got a fujifilm SD6500fd I like the face detection part of it, that is funky, picks people out perfectly.

but depends on what you want, physical size, features, zoom (optical better than digital), pixel size etc.

I reall like the one I got, although some say there are better cameras, but to be honest, I am not into photography that much, but I got it for better snaps of the new arrival in march (although again not mine :D )

if you want to see some pics of what I have taken with my new camera, its here (http://picasaweb.google.com/ikthius)

I just bought a Fuji F45fd for £90 from Argos. It's a stunning little camera and it got a very good review from Channel 5's Gadget show.

Are you looking for a compact camera or something a bit bigger?. Take a look at the new Ricoh R7 - 8 megapixel,28mm-200mm. I have the RR30 which is an earlier 3 megapixel incarnation. My current camera is a Fuji S5700 which has halved in price since I bought it in April - http://tinyurl.com/2dejx5. What Digital Camera (issue 130) suggest these models:
Nikon S200 (88%), Canon A560 (89%), Panasonic FX30 (90%), Pentax A30 (89%) Richoh R6 (89%)

Thank you all for your replies you have given me a lot of choices. Also thanks banjo for the suggestion to buy a camcorder, i have recently bought a sony mini dv camcorder (dcr-hc37e) which for all who is intrested is a very good entry level camcorder, so i wont be needing one thanks anyway.

Call me old fashioned but i cant stand cameras without a viewfinder. Many of the new compact digis dont have one and its awful trying to use one in bright weather. Look for one WITH a viewfinder. I think Jessops website has a camera selector thingey to help you pick features.

For the record, i use a Nikon D40 SLR

We recently bought my mother-in-law a Canon A570 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-PowerShot-Digital-Camera-Stabilizer/dp/B000NK3H4S/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197305287&sr=1-11) - 4x Opt Zoom, Face recog and Image Stab. Superb camera and a bargain at under £120. (Don't forget a 2Gb SD card as well)
Alternatively, for ultra compact the IXUS 950 (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Canon-IXUS-950-Digital-Camera/dp/B000RGLZYC/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1197305287&sr=1-4) is a good bet.

Panasonic Lumix DMCTZ3? Wide angle Leica lens (great for pregnant women & fat blokes! :) ), ten times optical zoom, 7.2 mega pixels. Great camera and compact too!

No viewfinder but the lcd screen is terrific and adjustable for viewing angle. Allthough it takes a while to get used to if you're used to a viewfinder, I've had no problems even in bright sunlight.

Available for c. £170

Hi all thanks for your suggestions youve given me plenty of choices to chew over, i am very intrestd in the canon A720is, i think it has a very good spec for the price. I think the main reason i like this camera is because it still looks very similar to my old canon A60 but has a much higher specification. If i decide to buy this camera i will keep this thread updated with my opinion of the camera.;)

I recently got my first digital camera, so I'm not an expert. Got a Casio Exilim EX-Z850 (£160 from ebuyer) plus a 4gig high speed SD card(£30 from Amazon) in the summer and I'm very pleased with it. Good quality photos and the video is fine with the downloadable upgrade.

Hi ive got it down to two cameras, i cant make my mind up between the canon A720is or the sx100is is it worth paying the extra for the sx100is, has anyone got any of these cameras? I would apreciate your opinions.

The 720 has 6x optical zoom, the 100 has 10x optical zoom but appears to be a bit chunkier. I would go with the 720 as I'd want a slim compact that I'd carry with me at all times.

I give another vote for the 720. It has a lot of punch for a decent price. The 8Mp sensor is plenty. My relatively new Nikon D40 Digital SLR is an 8MP camera and this level of resolution is plenty.

Also the 100 does not offer that much extra but it is somewhat more bulkier. You will find it a bind to cart about.

Even though i have a Nikon D40 SLR, i always keep a small compact digital "happy snapper" with me because they are so easy to carry and convenient. The nikon comes out when i have time/space/can be bothered to carry it as it can be more creative and flexible for many applications.

In day to day snapping, i'll bet there is little or no difference in image quality between the likes of the cannon 720 happy snapper and a digital SLR. The only thing the SLRs provide is greater flexiblity, more lenses etc etc

I have to agree with Vlad, I have a Fuji S5700 which is too bulky to be carried around on a daily basis and a Ricoh RR30 compact which is always with me and has captured some nice photo's. I'm looking at the new Ricoh R7 as a replacement for the RR30, 10 Megapixels and a 7x optical zoom, yummy.

Hi all i have made the purchase, thanks for your advise i went for the obvious choice , the canon 720is and what a cracker it is. Ive had hands on with the 720 and the sx100 and i have to say the sx100 was to bulky. I think it would be to big to cart around on holiday,ok now back to the 720 it has 6x optical zoom,8mp,image stabiliser and a list of manual shooting modes as long as your arm to keep even the most adventurous amater photographer happy.

I managed to bag it for £169 from a well known high street camera shop!

Now for the negative points it is a hungry little begger it went through the supplied alkiline AA batteries in aprox 2 hours granted i was having a good play with the cameras functions. I think i will be purchasing a good set of Ni-mh 2500ma batteries. Also the camera is only supplied with a 16mb sd card which only holds 4, yes 4 images at max resolution, but as far as i am aware most cameras are supplied with similar capacity cards.

Can any one recomend any cheap reliable sd cards preferably 2 gb?

A bit more pricey are the Panasonic DMC-FZ18 and the Nikon D40x.

It'll be interesting to see if their prices come down in the New Year sales!!

My vote goes to the D40x (as I've got one). Great introduction to dSLRs.

I use SanDisk Ultra II - http://tinyurl.com/29hxv2

As far as batteries go, Zinglebarb and a few others suggested Sanyo eneloop
because they keep their charge far longer. I've found them to be very good.

I've got a Fuji S6500 and am looking to buy either the Nikon D40 or the Olymus EOS 350D. Although, as has previously stated, bridge and full SLR cameras are a bit inconvenient to carry around with you all the time, so I am also going to be looking at a compact as well(probably a Fuji, Sony or Pannasonic).

I thought about a compact but then I thought about thinking ahead a bit further. It all depends on if you just want to take snaps or experiment and play around a bit. I wanted to try a bit of manual photography, nothing serious but a bit of achievement and see some different results than what a compact can do.

Ok you can't carry a dSLR around with you all the time but I wouldn't want to carry a compact around with me all the time either. But if I know I'm going somewhere where I might need the camera then it's no problem at the end of the day.

Besides I wouldn't trade in a 200mm lens now for anything.

I now have some (so I've been told) some very good pictures hanging on my walls that I have taken, that I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered to take or have gone out of my way to take using a compact and to me, that's the difference, as with dSLRs you see things just that slightly differently because you can.
