View Full Version : Getting a stereo out of a Ford Ka

The stereo on our Ka has stopped working ... well, actually, I think the speaker wires have come loose. One speaker stopped a few weeks ago, now the other one has. We live on the end of several miles of extremely bumpy road, I'm working on the assumption that the wiring loom is coming loose. It's the first thing I want to check, anyway.

The problem is, the stereo is completely integrated into the dash. There are four holes that look like they are designed for some kind of removal tool, which naturally I don't have.

Does anyone know a clever way to whip it out so I can check the wiring?

If you lived near here I would just say leave it parked near your closest park and give the locals 5 mins ;)

You need one of these (http://www.caraudioplus.co.uk/DIN_Radio_Removal_Tool)

Alternatively a wire coat-hanger twisted imaginatively should work just as well.

The 4 holes are probably for a standard removal tool, halfrauds will sell you a set for a couple of quid, but your more specialised car audio place will most likely pull the radio and take a look for you either for nothing or for a couple of quid. Just remember to have the keycode handy if you do pull the radio.

wire coat hanger is the way forward :) Tis what i did with my puma... make sure you have about 3" to go into the stereo so you make sure you get past the release pins. Push one homemade removal tool in each side, push them towards the edges of the stereo, and then the stereo should slide out towards you. Might need to be a little bit of wriggling but it should come free :)

Most Ford radios don't tend to be key-coded though as they're MOSTLY Double-Din thus useless in the dashboards of most other cars even if you could get them working!

5 minutes? Is that a slow day?

This one does have a key code, but I still have the original card with the number on it.

I haven't had a chance to try yet but I fancy having a go with bent coathangers - probably at the weekend so I can do it in daylight!

I know a 'guy' who could sort it for you ;) (but you might not get it back)

It only takes a few minutes to remove (i used to have the same one in my mundaneo). You'll probably need to input the code again after disconnecting it from the battery using the stalk controls if you have them.

Input using stalk controls? What are they? I've always put the code in using the stereo buttons in the past when the battery's been off for any reason.

Ah, you may not have controls on your indicator stalk?

Oh, those sort of controls. No, it's only a KA2, and a very old one at that!

Surely leaving the stereo not working will give you a 20% power increase ;), sound like you suspension needs fixing too (or a bit of weight loss)

When you make the coat hanger tools make sure you use stiff hangers, the reason being you will need to put some sideway pressure on the pins to release the springs on the stereo. Have you tried looking behind the dash from the floor upwards. Sometimes stereos are in craddles and the plug is attached to the cradle and not the stereo.
