No connection yet again in Manchester (cable)....modem ready light just flashes at high speed and there is no IP, despite reboots etc.

For the umpteenth time I'm having to use a dialup.

It's a pity that there are NO reliable ISPs in the UK any more.

I am on mate, must be local to you - or just you:p:

No joy from technical support, they are not answering the phone, so yet again I'm paying a vast fortune for a service that doesn't work.

I might have to do the unthinkable and call Sky for broadband. I can't work like this.

Seems there's an issue reported on the status page, which is at least something. I'm guessing I must be affected by that, though it says TV as well and that seems fine (admittedly not tried VoD).

Yes mine's down. City Center Manchester. Was working when I came home from work about 6. Down now. Thankfully I've also got a 3g card for my laptop. Not obtaining IP, modem lights are on indicating service.

LAst month they disconected me for no reason, damn billing, thought it was them again. I called, they said I hadn't paid my bill, they looked on the computer and so Ohh you have! and reconected me! Great aren't they! Won't even go into the 6MB broadband offpeak or 1MB peak on my 20MB connection.

Yes its down for me - but I have a wireless connection from BT as a backup. I have my BB from a STB and the logs say that its failing to lease an address from the DHCP.

Yes mine is always like that. less than 1mb peak, no more than 4mb off peak, and it's a 20mb service. They have told me this is perfectly normal as it's only "up to" 20mb.

Ours has just come back on 5mins ago... in Heywood (North Manchester). Been off since ~20:20 tonight, I rang up CS and asked if there was any known issues (this was at 20.50), they said no problems in my area.

Rang my mate who is on VM in Liverpool, he checked the status page and said "oh, theres a problem in Manchester, ticket opened at 20:23"... Seems India has a different status page to the customers??

Dunno if it is related but the local news is just reporting on widespread power cuts around Greater Manchester tonight - Bolton v City game affected, lots of homes without power for an hour or so. I guess this could have disrupted certain servers for a while tonight.

Now that you mention it John (jbrennand), we had some funny power problems earlier this evening, the lights flickered and the TV went off for a split second and then was extremely framey for the following 5mins.

The broadband however stayed OK for another hour after that though.

I blame the chavs with the fireworks to be honest... :D

It must have been down to the power cut, Mines never gone off in the 2 and a half years ive been with NTL and only once in the 4 years I had with Telewest before that. Infinitely more reliable than ADSL any day. At least most problems with Cable tend to be area related, so they get fixed quicker.

My connection was lost too. I noticed that parts of Swinton were in total darkness. The lights flickered here and the tv went off.

I am in the area which was affected by this fault. In the absence of any notification on the status number I phoned the Broadband faults line and (eventually) I was connected.

I have no complaint about the attitude of the agent I spoke to. He was friendly and helpful and tried to fix the fault. He was, however, hampered by not apparently having been informed that the whole of the Manchester area was blacked out on broadband. This has to be a management fault. Eventually he concluded that my STB must be faulty and booked an engineer for the earliest possible slot - 5 November. (That should have rung alarm bells because two days wait is normally the maximum necessary).

Some time after my fault conversation I received a call from another Virgin Media customer who was also disconnected. This gave us the clue about area-wide disconnection. Naturally my connection was re-established later that evening.

In order to assist Virgin Media and not have the time of their engineer wasted I used the contact form on the website to request that the engineer visit be cancelled. I have just had a response from the Customer Care team informing me that they cannot cancel it unless I send them my CVP (which I do not recall ever receiving).

If my case is typical Virgin Media engineers in the Manchester area will now be rushing from one call to another since they have been booked and cannot be cancelled. I am sure this will add great benefits to the profitability of Virgin Media.

Regards

Malc
