Dont think It's traffic shaping tbh. You shouldn't be shaped that low...

Have you checked your modem signal levles??

For me, this pathetic speed comes on from 6pm to 11pm, and week ends, (I do not do any downloading), so there is nothing wrong with the equipment. Someone at VM flicks a switch to slow us all down for god knows what reason, and its been like that for the last 3 weeks and for a lot of people.

If all the heavy users are being shaped after 4pm, i would also like to know why its so crap between approx 5pm to about midnight for everyone else?
Checked with a few users i know around my area so i know its not just me. ;)

If you dont have a router, post in virginmedia.support.broadband.cable (newsgroup). See customer zone for instructions on how to use newsgroups.

Oversubscription is when the master router (UBR) that services your area has too many customers, and it cant cope with it.

As for your router, if your running 20megs, and cant get good speeds, it might be because your router is not up to processing the data. Test without the router, see if you get any higher, if not, you will need a new router.

Hi All.

Not sure if this will help but I found this article when I was getting slow speeds:
http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.ph

No one on tech support there told me about it. I had been receiving sub 4mb for over 2 months. Found the doc above, followed the steps and my speed climbed to 18-19mb. been like that for a month now.

My 20Mb connection was crap in the evening a few months back despite being told by "knowledgeable" Indian staff that there was nothing wrong. I had a big moan then and it miraculously sorted itself.

For the last 2 weeks it's been dodgy again, getting steadily worse. Called the rip-off number only to be told there was nothing wrong, and trying to blame my poor speeds on my router (BS). I don't call getting <400kbs on a 20Mb connection "nothing wrong". As soon as it gets near midnight, the speeds go up to normal levels (15-19Mb) without any intervention on my part, so that rules out anything my end being the issue.

Speeds drop, pings rise soon after 4pm, and then around midnight they return to normal, what does that say?

I really have just about had enough, and if it's not sorted when the engineer comes out next Monday (5th Nov), then VM can kiss my ass goodbye.

I'm tired of being fobbed off with lame excuses while being charged a premium price for £ shop tat. :td:

As much as I'd hate to lose the extra speed when it does work, it's looking increasingly likely that I'm gonna have to go on ADSL and be lucky to get 2Mb, but hopefully at least I'll get that speed consistently :erm:

I've attached my last load of speed tests at various time.

www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) using either Sittingbourne (nearest to me) or London servers. I can use other sites etc. which give me similar results.

My modem info shows the relevant items to be within spec (those the engineers have told me in the past).

It's strange it's only down to certain areas, shirley they could sort out the worse areas in some way or another. Saying that I've never got less than 20mb at all times where I am (cambs). I suppose I should count myself lucky after reading the troubles that a lot are having.

Could be worse, a mate of mine on BT 8mb adsl in the Ascot area max out at about 100k/sec.
