Hi,
Nice to find some place where i can moan about my troubles!!
i have 2 issues poking my behind.

1) constant slow speeds on 20mbit in the Wolverhampton area. ( i understand the traffic shaping issue, but i am getting like ~500kb/s even out of traffic shaping hours!)

This is really starting to become a big issue for me. Its a constant pain, i have noticed that if i restart both modem and router, the speeds return to 20mbit... only to decrease again after a few minutes of usage.

2) The router which telewest provided (Netgear WGR614 v6) keeps on dropping connection!! AGAIN problem solved when router is restarted... i've been battling this issue for weeks, I have " a complaint case" open with netgear as i read somewhere that this problem is resolved if the router firmware is upgraded.... which i am unable to do!!

I've tried speaking to the indian call centre, but swear down, (im indian my self) those people need to be lined up and shot! lol.

I really need some assistance. life cannot go on like this!
i've seen quite a few threads here about the speed and high ping issues, so i guess others are also in the same boat.

Kindly advise futher.
Regards.

You need to establish if is is the router or the Virgin Media connection that causes the problem. For a couple of days can you try just having a single computer connected direct to the modem (no router)?

hrm, yea i see your point. my current setup = pc connected to modem via ethernet through router. i only use the wi-fi at times through my laptop... hence i feel that i have two separate issues, because restarting the modem restores my speed....

check your modem logs and post online the results.

I used that router aswell and have been told that the modem that was suppilied by telewest only has a 10mb wan hence the reason you get low speeds and why I did just ordered a d-link so should be ok

The ip address is 192.168.100.1. You will prompt for a username and password these will be root (both username & password)

Once logged in you will see an option for logs, copy them here and we will be able to determine if there is any major issues

I have the same router and a similar problem, except for the dropped connections.
When I switch my router on I too only get 500kbps over the wireless, but get my break-neck 2Mb service through a wired connection OK.
If I go to the router config and select the wireless settings, don't make any changes but hit 'apply', the wireless goes to full speed. I'm stumped as to the reason why.

They look like the modem logs.

Whenever the modem connects, it's constantly checking for internal software (Firmware) updates.
Because we have locked this modem down as it's property of Virgin Media, it will be unable to update it's firmware and so on, hence the errors.

could this be the cause of my problems?

although i think it probably has something to do with that nasty router :(

The error messages you have provided from the modem are not the problem.
TBH, this could be a number of things, modem, up/downstream power, frequency of modem.
And then onto the router, failing router, channel selection ( have you tried changing this? ), how far away is the router from the PC?

And you do know that getting 20Mbit over wireless could prove difficult :D

ok - suggestion unplug your router and directly connect your cable modem to your pc and restart.

See if you get a similar issue. Possible router conflict. It also looks like its having problems getting the 20mb config file. So its more than likely your not even on the 20mb.

There is an option in the cable modem to see which config file you have. Search around in the menus to see if you can see, otherwise I will post this evening advising where the screen is

in response. i am on the 20mbit for sure! as i reach 2200kb/s speeds when things work...
I dont know if you noticed before or not. Im not using Wi-fi on my main PC! i've connected the ethernet to the router, which connected to the modem. so the connection runs over a dual gbit LAN on this PC..
as the connection is fed through the router, when the router drops the connection my ethernet also drops.. thats how i am able to tell that there is some intermittent problem.
hope this helps?

Back on topic:
Thanks for the help provided so far, r00t very kindly, is also looking into my modem issues to solve the problem. and as stated by waynetaylor1982, i will probably need to replace that pathetic excuse of router that is the Netgear WRG614v6.

Thanks you for your assistance once again.
