Well after an exaustive search, about 1\2hr I think I may have found out what it is.

Its a Vauxhall Motorcycle circa 1922\23

Here is what I found from a cached page on google

THE VAUXHALL MOTORBIKE (1922/23)

In 1922 Vauxhall started work on its first and only motorcycle. The machine was designed by Major Frank B Halford who was a very well known aero-engineer who created the Cirrus engine for de Havilland in 1924. Halford was also responsible for the flat H liquid cooled Napier Sabre and worked on the Jet engine development with Sir Frank Whittle.

By 1923 two machines had been completed before production difficulties made it clear that the machine was not going to be a financial success. A further six frames and twelve engines were made but the machines and spares were offered for sale to company personnel.

Two complete bikes are known to have been sold to a draftsman and an apprentice but only one machine is known to survive today. Registration number 8718MN was in a private collection on the Isle of Man for many years but is now believed to be to be in Ashurst, W Sussex in England.

This single seater motorcycle was a very advanced design for the 1920’s and it had a wheelbase of 58 in, a length of 90 in and a height of 39 in. It weighed in at 415 lb and featured a duplex cradle frame with coil-sprung twin forks, no rear suspension and no dampers.

The engine was a 4 cylinder square (67mm bore and stroke) unit (945cc giving circa 30bhp @ 3500 rpm) with separate air cooled in line cylinders, aluminium crankcase, 3-bearing 2-piece crankshaft, single carburettor, magneto ignition and 6-volt electrics. Lubrication was by wick to the overhead valve rockers and by dippers on the ends of the connecting rods at the bottom end. The cylinder head was fixed but overhead valves were used with a side camshaft.

A 3 speed box and shaft drive was fitted with a 6 in multi-plate clutch, 7 in drum brakes and 700x80 tyres. The reported top speed was 82mph.

I found it by searching for the reg No, seeing as it's a classic bike it turned up trumps.

Its about 1\3rd of the way down the page under the title The Vauxhall Motorbike

Hope this has helped.

Here are a few of my Dad's/friends bikes from around 50 years ago, he did have a Harley Davidson at one time, but don't know if any of these are it. If anyone can tell me what make, age or anything about them, I would be very grateful. Incidentally, at a time when very few people had transport, we travelled in the sidecar to many a picnic, and happy days youth hosteling.

The one on the left is a Matchless. You may be able to determine which one by looking here (http://www.vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Matchless%20Bikes/Matchless%20Index.htm)...

I have just been over on the Photo competition thread and peanutkp's entry has reminded me about this thread from last year. So bump, bump.:D

Is their anyone who can identify this motorbike for me?

The photo was possibly taken in the 30's the rider being my husband's uncle who raced, with my husband's father for several years in the TT and I know they were riding 'Excelsiors' in the 1930 race.

Any help will be much appreciated.

From the tank & the rear wheel arrangement, looks like a 1920's machine to me Jo.

Will do some digging...

Possibly a Triumph SD (http://vintagebike.co.uk/Bike%20Directories/Triumph%20Bikes/pages/Triumph-SD-24.htm) 1924ish?

Cheers Cobby. The picture could well have been from the late 20s. Len pictured here, would often play around with his brother Raymond's bikes.

John's father was a sponsored rider with Belle Vue Aces from 1928 into the 40's so it's possible that his love of motorbikes could have meant that the bike Len is sitting on is a hybrid of all the bits and pieces he would have hanging about.

Yes, the headlight & front mudguard aren't quite like the one I linked to.

The Triumph site does say though that the owner claims it's original, but the second owner added the lights in 1946...

I think you're right Cobby. The bike certainly has a strong look of a Triumph, from whom Ray did get some sponsorship.

We know that through his contacts at Triumph he was invited to race German bikes on the continental circuit in the mid 30s but by then his deafness was proving to be too great a hindrance to deal with living abroad.
