If you can never achieve anywhere near the full 20MB speed that you subscribe to via Virgin Media Cable then it may not be Virgin that is in the wrong! Follow the simple steps below:

1 Make sure that your modem supports 20MB speeds. Try this link here (http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html...t_service.html)
2 Make sure your router (if you have one) supports 20MB speeds. Google your router make and modem number.
3 If you are using a router or connecting via wireless then try testing your speed via a direct ethernet connection from your modem to your computer. If you cannot achieve a connection restart your cable modem
4 Downloading files from the Virgin Media Game Files website may give a more accurate result than using a speed test.
5 If you are advanced enough then check the power levels of your modem
6 Do a virus/spyware scan, clean temporary files and defrag your harddrive
7 Test the speed of your connection another computer if possible
8 Learn how to optimise your connection on this virgin media webpage. See here (http://www.virginmedia.com/help/20mb-broadband-optimisation.php)
9 Try to find out if you have been "cloned". See here (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33621757-possibly-been-cloned.html)If anyone would like to add anything else to this thread or any detailed explanations it would be greatly appreciated. I am just trying to help people and prevent loads of "i have slow speed threads" that may be easily prevented from being posted by using the steps above

:D Me and darthlinux think this should be a sticky thread :D

Ah, good, some common sense for once.

As we go into the unknown with faster speeds, unfortunately just blaming your ISP isn't going to be good enough. Everyone needs to know that there PC can handle these higher speeds, whether it's because it needs a few tweaks to buying components that will enable you to achieve these speeds.

There is always going to be the darkforce that is the World Wide Web that will always prevents you from achieving these speeds as well, but if you make sure that your PC is capable that at least is one of many factors preventing you from getting the desired speed.

So don't just sit there and blame Virginmedia, make sure your PC has got the guts to do the job first.
