Hi guys,

I dont know what brought this on but my broadband has suddenly started running at only approx 1.5mbit instead of up to 20mbit that I am paying for. Normally my internet runs at around 14mbit (I get download speeds of 1200-1400kb/sec) but as of today I can only max out downloads from ANY site at 170kb/sec.

Please someone help me! Are there any diagnostic websites you want me to get info from and paste for you?

I am running on Vista
I am using a ntl:home 120 cable modem

Thanks in advance

Simon

Yep Same here seems as though there has been a steady decline in speeds over recent months now I cannot even get beyond 1 Meg. I will be better off using dial up at this rate.

wow, have you been downloading heavily today?

hmmm, even if you have you should at least be getting 5000kb's cut your limit to 5MB if you download over 3GB in peak hours 4-12, your not even getting that.

All I can say try is to take out all you leads on your modem, shut down wait a few minutes plug modem back in wait few minutes then start comp back up, if that doesn't work wait for more tech help.

Don't go calling India(Virgin media helpline) just yet will waste your time and money, they will prob will tell you the same just a re-boot of the modem.

Sorry can't help more pretty new, just try a re-boot see if that helps any.

I just rang the Service Status line and have been told that there is a problem with the SG1 (Stevenage) postcode. However I am SG13 (Hertford) and my main UBR is Luton and local is in Ware.

Hope someone can provide help, could do without ringing VMTS and spending 25p/min to talk to someone reading from a script :(

Thanks

I've already tried rebooting my router and my cable modem. I guarantee if I ring Virgin Media now they will take the easy option out and blame my router. Which has been working fine since I bought it.....sigh :(

And nope, I haven't been downloading heavily at all. If I had been they would drop my broadband down to about 4/5mbit but I'm not even getting that

Here are the readings from the Cable Modem Config Service thing....

Downstream Receive Power Level : -0.46 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 35.33 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 44.00 dBmv

Are these normal?

SIGH

I just rang Virgin Media and spoke to somebody that hasnt got a clue what they are talking about. She went ahead and ordered me a new cable modem (a 250 one). She says thats the reason why I'm getting slow speeds on my 20mbit service. I tried to argue the case with her, which is "why has the cable modem been running at 10-14mbit for months and all of a sudden today it has dropped to 1.5"

her reply was "Sir, this is because of your cable modem, it is old and is not sufficient for the 20mbit service." "If you don't want a new cable modem I can go ahead and cancel the order, sir."

How bloody annoying, 25p a min that cost me and I've got nowhere. I really don't think the new modem will make a difference :(

This is on the virgin media website....

Looks like the person you spoke to does know what they are talking about

QUOTE FROM SITE
Ambit 100, 120 and 200 cable modems - more information

After further investigations we have now concluded that there may be circumstances where Ambit 100 and Ambit 120 modems do not meet the performance criteria for the Broadband Size XL service.

We recommend that any customers who have either of these modems now request a cable modem swap-out in order to get the maximum performance from their broadband connection.

The Ambit 200 modems meet the specified performance criteria.

Oh and running at 10-14 Mb, you are paying for upto 20Mb and in most cases with cable you will get very close to the 20Mb connection you requested, 10-14 is hardly great....

What you just said made me chuckle seeing as I've had numerous conversations with VM in the past and they said the NTL:HOME 120 modems work fine for 20mbit, ha ha!

I know, 10-14 is hardly great but Im more worried about right now.

I'm getting download speeds of 170kb/sec which is an absolute farce.

I've tried a direct connection between the cable modem and my computer (minus the router) and I'm still having the same speed problems :(

Best to force them to give you a new modem, I used to have the Terayon TJ210 and with that I couldn't even keep a connection! Im only on 4M connection!!

Phone call to India and replaced next day with a nice wee NTL250 modem, cant remember the last time I had reboot it, think been few months! yea I know!
