This is very irritating. Recently we've had an engineer come round to replace our old "classic grey" cable model for the smaller black VM modem because he said our old one wasn't doing the speeds - we should be on 4MBit.

So that was done and things seemed to be much faster or normal. But today - it's been sluggish, speed tests have reported on average 1.5MBit. And that's not satisfactory.

Here are my cable modem stats:

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 4
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : 1.7 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 35.9 dB

Sat, 29 Sep 2007 15:13:00 GMT

Test 1: 1024K took 5793 ms = 176.8 KB/sec, approx 1457 Kbps, 1.42 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 3543 ms = 289 KB/sec, approx 2381 Kbps, 2.33 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 4858 ms = 210.8 KB/sec, approx 1737 Kbps, 1.7 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 9916 ms = 206.5 KB/sec, approx 1702 Kbps, 1.66 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1819 Kbps, 1.78 Mbps

Is the best way to call an engineer round again? I've already power-cycled the thing. I'm also getting pretty bad pings and lag spikes during gaming.

:welcome:

what is your upstream power level, the downstream values seem to be ok.

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 5
Upstream Frequency : 41584000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 50.8 dBmV
Upstream Mini-Slot Size : 2

But the speed tests reports the upload fine as being about 400kbps.

Kbc if you're only on the 4meg service then it's up to 4 meg. if you're getting 1.5 thats actually not that bad for a Saturday afternoon / evening now.

Bare in mind i am on the 20meg and half the time i am lucky to get 5meg speed.

that is ok for power level, too, so it looks like the problem is something external, rather than your connection.

For reference the nominal power levels are given here

Hmm... I will test out the speeds again tomorrow and see how things pan out. Hopefully things will pick up with the webpage loading and online gaming.

same problems all over...

what?

the service is upto, but that does not mean you should be getting less than that and sitting back doing nothin, if you are gettin a lot less than the speeds advertised and you know its a fault with virgin then speak to them.
get them to sort it or give u a credit on you're next bill
im sure il get replies of "the techies r idiots and will blame you're pc/router etc", but if you dont tell them its slow how can you expect it to improve.
id advise as i always do using downloads to test you're speed. not speed test sites.

gamesfiles.virginmedia.com is usually reliable.
or
microsoft.com

iv nto tried this link - http://tinyurl.com/3cf2rr - but tech support r bein told to give it out, apparently a pc optimiser but iv nto checked it myself
im sure its safe when its bein given out by vm

To be fair what?, the pc should automatically cope with a 4Mb connection without the optimisation, I definitely agree that using web based speed test sites are about as useful as a chocolate fireguard, I personally dont think the "techies" are idiots, IMO they have to be consistent, and if some people construe that as being idiotic, then they have little idea of how "stupid" the average person can be.
