Hello,

Sorry for starting another thread regarding download speeds, but I got to ask.....

Currently I am on the 20MB contract,It is due to end in a few months.I am in two minds about staying with VM,or to sign up with another ISP?

Why,Like most it's very rare to obtain the speed I am paying for.I have used the usual speedtesters, they give various results.
For example this evening at 22:48 GMT my connection is 18,11kb's to 19,545kb's Download, and 630kb's to 735kb's Upload.I believe these are respectable speeds?.But its different when I try and download from websites. Why offer a20MB service when you can not download at this rate.

I have read that VM are now offering 50MB,why.

Can anyone offer any advice or suggestions to help if possible with improving down/upload speeds.I wouild supply my modem settings, but I can not locate the link to view the details.

Like I said any help is appreciated.Thank you, regards,Mike:)

When you say 18,11kb's to 19,545kb's download, there presumably is a number missing in 18,11? If so, these speeds are as good as you can expect them to be considering overheads. Where do you get these speed?

What do you mean when you say it's different when downloading from web pages? What speeds are you getting, and from where? You are aware that you can only download as fast as the server you're downloading from can support?

VM do not currently offer 50MB. I believe they are conducting some trials.

Your speeds seem fine if its slow from a 3rd party website its not vm fault its the site bandwidth or servicer is able to cope with the 20mb speed if you do leave you prob wont find some where with great sppeds unless u like close to the exchange I say stay as ur speed is fine and should enjoy it I think the modem page is 192.168.100.1 sory that my router config page

Hello all and many thanks for your help.

These are my modam stats

Name
WebSTAR
Hardware Version
2.1
Software Version
v2.0.2r1256-060303

Receive Power Level
0.6 dBmV

Transmit Power Level
34.0 dBmV

Cable Modem Status

Does this help?.
From what you have said my speeds are normal, perhaps its just me expecting more from VM.

I downloaded a video from dl.tv,my average speed was 2.21 MB a sec.

It seems I may be hasty in posting this thread, better the devil you know:dunce:

Thank you again for your help.Cheers

2.21MB/s = 17.68Mb/s, which isn't too shabby.

The (probably) only way you will get better speeds is with Be, and then only if you are very close to the BT exchange.
