View Full Version : How much do YOU download?

I have been a customer of NTL/Virgin for over 4 years now, and have never had any problems with my broadband. I was therefore a bit surprised to find slow speeds recently (20mb package) and after some searching found the answer... needless to say I am not happy with the limits imposed.
I would like to ask the 'heavy bandwidth' users on these forums just how much they download, and if Virgin have ever contacted them regarding this.
I consider myself a heavy user, and since legal HD content, recorded TV shows, game demos etc. etc. are now available so freely there is no way to avoid heavy usage and this is something that needs to be considered by ISP's.
I don't really mind the 5mb cap during peak times, as long as I can continue downlading during that time and not start having someone telling me it's too much.
So - if any of you are downloading more than 10 gig daily and have, or have not had problems, I would love to know.

HHHmmm just over 500gb a month at the moment and no i've not had any problems, aside from where to put it all.

Tigerusernet belting at 2.3mb i guess about a shed load,daily,but most are transfered straight to dvd,i think i would say i really dont know,but i guess i get more than my money's worth.
I probably downloaded more in partial downloads just checking for that elusive 20Mb these last 3 months than what i actually have to use.
I`m not a heavy downloader at all though and some months the only thing i actually download are updates.I`m not saying i never fire ktorrent up before i go to bed but never 500G a month:shocked:
I have to watch enough s**t on that TV without downloading more if it too watch.
Besides,my TVout has went to pot at the moment and i`ll be damned if i`m doing that encoding lark again.
Once i fix the TVout i might go back to about 10G a month........if that.:)
We only need 20Mb so that myself and the kids can all be using our pc`s at the same time of an evening.Not something that STM goes hand in hand with.
Keelhaul the 5% i say and leave the rest of us alone:p:

about 40GB a month, at the moment, mostly TV series.
The bottleneck is watching them, I'm on 4Mb/s connection & a standard episode of say Heroes or 4400 in XVid from an HD source takes around 15 minutes to download the 400MB file - it then takes 45 minutes to watch it.
So a gig a day is nearly 2 hours telly - about as much as I can find time to watch.
Perhaps I should get more DVD box set copies, they take longer to download than they do to watch ;)

30gig so far this month. Sometimes it's heavier but I have never even been close to 100gig and have never hit STM although I disregard it when I want something.

On average, around 100-200GB a month.

I normally over 70 gig a month however have started to download files that are 10GB each so happy downloading

Got a 5TB Raid Setup.
Lot's n Lot's Of Linux Iso's ;)
And Heroes in HD (these weigh in at 11-12gb a go for the full 1080p releases) = NGs ;)

between 700gig to 900gigs a month on average thats with three people using the net ;)

it varies usually not that much
yesterday i started watching Heroes, So about 14 episodes in the past two days about 23GB, usually ill use 3-5GB a week when theres nothing i want to watch thats been on tv.

I must admit I am downloading so much these days compared to what I used to when I had a 1.1mb adsl line o the sad days of slow speeds but hey no stm atleast

I could download a 100 iso`s and still would`nt be over the 100G mark.
I`ve seen that "you must like Linux" joke/comment a few times when the heavy amounts get mentioned but,even just on this place though...most heavy downloaders i see are actually Windows users.....or so it seems anyway.
It`s turns out that i actually like Linux myself but i`ve certainly got better things to do with my "pc time" than sit downloading copious amounts of crud all day everyday.

too be honest I can see people using vm as they used to be truely unlimited stm aint that bad but hey I deal with I work for them so I get a great deal so even when i am shaped i only still pay £1.50 for 5mb

There are certainly a few things in life i take very very seriously but you can rest assured than not one of them have anything whatsoever to do with anything happening in virtual webworld here.
In fact some of the "goings on" i`ve come to know this last 18 months have been the "source" of sooo much fun & laughter.I`m forever falling off this chair of mine:)

Test 1: 1024K took 2962 ms = 345.7 KB/sec, approx 2849 Kbps, 2.78 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 4683 ms = 218.7 KB/sec, approx 1802 Kbps, 1.76 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 3941 ms = 259.8 KB/sec, approx 2141 Kbps, 2.09 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 8688 ms = 235.7 KB/sec, approx 1942 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps
Overall Average Speed = approx 2184 Kbps, 2.13 Mbps
I`m sure someones been off with some of mine when i was`nt looking:)
I`ll be jumping on the 1Mb stb at this rate.
Download roughly about 15GB a day, about 450GB a month.
Around about the 600GB mark, probably more with browsing/email/ftping.
It drops to about 150GB during the summer though, I've no idea why ;)

600-800GB a month depends on what sort of Linux or Distros is available ;)
Total for last month was 750 gigs worth of HD Linux instruction video's ;)
i would say probably 50/60gig a week, not 24/7 but use whenever so not bothered by STM whatsoever. if it kicks in in kicks in.
Got a letter back in the cap days for downloading 150gig in a month, told me to ease of so i downloaded 149gig and got another letter saying thankyou for reducing my download, lol

This last week or so has been a bit high what with OpenSuSE 10.3 (4G) and Kubuntu 7.10 (600M alternative install CD + packages). I also downloaded a movie that the copyright holder has released on a "Good Karma" license ie ok to download and make a couple of copies for family and friends but no selling/making money out of it.
There's 2 desktops and 2 laptops in the house and we average around 40-50gb a month which includes me using my connection for work every day but then I'm not one of them selfish gits who download the entire internet every day then complain when the ISP brings in traffic shaping when it's there own selfish actions that caused it.
270-300Gb/month on average.

Legally I cant see how anyone can download as much as alot people are stating in this topic in a conststant fashion. I can understand odd spikes in monthly usage but a few 100gb+ per month is just wrong.
Dont get me wrong the odd Linux distro or various games demos are huge but they're not something you go and download every night of every day over every month are they...
Many complain about the fair usage policy but to what avail? so some can up their monthly leech? VM traffic management was a good move i think, it's a shame that since then the VM network has gained some strange querks (bad pings to everything ftl).
just thought i would stick my 2 pence in here, sorry if it riles anyone.

If you are dismayed by this issue then I suggest you start your own thread and not try to pirate this one.

Sorry I dont think it was missing the whole point of the topic, the topic was in essence highlighting how much people download and legality was mentioned on page 2 and hints of trafic shaping are used in various places.
All I simply stated there was that it's amazing how much people are actually downloading and that for some of the quantities involved it is almost impossible to do this in a legal fashion (off topic maybe but used in places already, i was just more direct). I was in no way attempting to change this thread i was just stating a point that has been touched on in other comments, sorry if this lead the topic from where it was intending to go that was not my intention.
Anyhow to curb that line of thought and to follow on with the topic. I used to be what I thought was a heavy user, about 40gb a month, at that a heavy month, how wrong could I have been.
I think my maximum at the moment is about 10gb and that more than covers everything I need. You tube, joost, game, o/s and application updates included.

about 50GB roughly varies month by month that figure being the max i can figure out on top of me head?
I'm a light weight.I've downloaded 2 and a half GB since October 22 and it was a pain downloading some of that after 4pm.:(

Just out of curiosity, do you guys have to buy a hard drive every month, or do you delete the files after use?
Between 100-200GB a month. Storage is the main thing that's holding me back really.
