So.....

The modem you have is working fine, and you're having no problems with it. The only reason you want a new one is because your old one is slightly scratched?

You're planning on calling your ISP and telling them that you have a different model of modem to the one that you actually have, in the hope that they will send you a new modem free of charge to replace the one that you have that hasn't got anything wrong with it?

I don't know if it's illegal, although you are obtaining goods under false pretences or fraudulently.

Personally I hope that if you do this VM catch on to it cut your service off, and charge you for the remainder of your contract term.

It's people doing things like this that cost companies like VM money that they could more usefully be spending on maintaining the fragile network, thus leading to more problems for the rest of their customers.

they would find out anyway because you have to put in your address and their system will tell them that you are not a 20mb customer :dunce:

The Surfboard 4100 is one of the best modems anyway - well engineered devices by Motorola. So what if it's scratched, if it works, keep it!

This is true, it did me for nearly 10 years until I had to put in for a replacement for 20 Meg.

Now it's stuck in the loft in a box of 'puter bits and will never see use again since virginmedia never sent a prepaid envelope to return it

they dont even collect modems anymore so no need for it to be sent

why?

why?

the 4100 was probably the 4th modem in line since the start of cable modems, my old cmx which had to be bought at the time (first subscribers had to buy their modems) is only 7 years old

Telewest were using 4100's around 8-9 years ago.

That sounds like something my missus would do..
She actually told me to request a black modem when applying for our replacement so she did..........she said a potential blue one would clash too much with her current burgundy color scheme:rolleyes:

Seriously though,i did have to add some bit`s from our old NTL120 to help the new Virgin 255`s stability...

Just the little rubber feet of course, this bugger was sliding everywhere to start out:)
Possibly due to the constant moving of wires and swapping of pc`s,os`s & nic`s this last 3 months but either way it`s all stopped now(i hope):)

I loved my SB4100, had it for 7 years, I got 20mb no problem, then it went nuts after a failed firmware update, lights flashing all over the place and had to have it replaced with a SA2100, it works fine but I preferred the SB4100.

Was just thinking the SB4100 and 5100 should easily do 20Mbit, they did the full DOCSIS 1.1 speeds, handled QAM256 and had a 100Mbit full duplex Ethernet port too.

They also had one of the best diagnostics pages... helped me no end when I was on telewest and we had a dodgy cabinet for a while!
