View Full Version : Not getting the FULL 20mb?

I know there are LOADS of threads on this but i can't find a fix. I upgraded to a 20mb connection with VM yesterday and it all went ok. At first i was barely getting 6.9mb connecting. Then this morning i was getting a dire 512k connection. But with a few changes on TCPOptimizer I'm getting 10mb connection. But why only 10mb? So i looked on the modems control panel - 192.168.100.1. I have a WebSTAR EPC2100R2 modem. And I look on the signals section:

Downstream Status: Operational
Channel ID: 0
Downstream Frequency: 331000000 Hz
Modulation: 256QAM
Bit Rate: 10240000 bits/sec
Power Level: 1.7 dBmV
Signal to Noise Ratio: 39.9 dB

Im only getting fed a 10mb connection, and I'm getting the FULL 10mb. BUT i should be getting 20mb, i've done everything short of phoning virgin concerning the matter. Restarted the modem ect. Is there anything I can do before ringing up virgin?

Has your area been upgraded to 20Mb yet?

Cyph3r

How would I check? I live in Telford, Shropshire. But surely they would tell me if the area isn't even capable of 20mb before they make me pay for 20mb i cant actually have?

there is this vm webpage that can tell you.

Telford or Shropshire isn't listed but I guess i'll be in the birmingham area and it says that they're complete.

fatassmichael
12-08-2007, 00:29
I would call CS (as that number is free from a VM landline) and check your area has been upgraded, if they dont know, call tech support and ask them, and ask for a refund of the charges.

You may need a new modem. If you are part of Birmingham then I think your modem can only handle 10Mb. You need one that can handle 20Mb.

According to this link, his current modem is fine.

according to some other forums. My modem, then WebSTAR EPC2100R2, gets sent out with the 20mb package, and some people report it is capable of the 20mb speed. So that cant be the issue =[

*edit* fatassmichael beat me to it =P

I have the Sci-Atlanta 2100 and it's just fine for 20mb

Ah ok, you may be on the Wolverhampton part? So you could be upgraded this month.

the charge is for the XL package not for the 20meg upgrade

many people before the upgrades were implemented in their area were charged £37 but didnt have 20meg

Yes Telford is on the Wolverhampton headend which is due to be upgraded this month.

The EPC2100R2 SA Webstar modem can support 20 MB with no problems.

You could possibly be traffic managed, however if thats the case what time did you check you're modem config page at? How much did you download to check you're connection speed?

Well they have sorted my area out and can download at 97 kb/s on average and upload at 11.2kb/s and thats on a 20MEG connection. If anyone reads this who is thinking about subscribing to virgin forget it as you might aswell trust the reliability with a moron. You might get a better, faster more reliable service with better customer support than the complete dumb idiots they have in tech support. In fact I should rephrase that morons shouldnt even be brought down to the level of the virgin media heirachy as they are far more superior and is completely unfair on them. Have they no clue what-so-ever. Bring on the OFCOM revolution and lets all claim the millions back off the ****s who have robbed us blind for months. They just dont want to spend the money upgrading the equipment yet are willing to rob the british public blind. It's not on and I for one wont stand for it. Complain enough and you get your net free each month like I did. Maybe then they might do something.

When I was on 4mb's I could download off most websites at roughly 440k per second, but since being on 20mbs Im lucky if I can get 250k off some sites.

grisoft.com winzip.com etc would give me 440k on 4mbs, but 20mbs gives me 180k.

We were all better off on any speed other than the 20MB. there is a lot of people dreading being upgraded to 20MB from their 10MB. can you believe that?

But i ALWAYS get the full 10mb. But i should be getting 20mb. Everyone understand? They're giving me 10mb and i get 10mb, never any less.

IN YOUR CASE!!

Why don't people wake up and smell the coffee?? It's not the whole service that doesn't work - how can you explain my full 20meg connection if Virgin are run by idiots? (Which they aren't - FACT). It could be a number of things going wrong - could even be something you are doing wrongly - but no, it's never that is it it's ALWAYS virgin's fault...
