When I first got interested in newsgroups, I used this site to get all the info I needed about news servers, news readers, PAR files etc.

Agreed - the slyck site is very informative.

The problem with a lot of newsgroup software is that it can appear a bit daunting to the beginner. You might want to sign up to Usenext (http://www.usenext.com/). They have a 14-day free trial, and I found that their software was quite easy to use to get the hang of things (in much the same way as AOL software is easy to use, until you find the alternatives you prefer)

Do you intend to use a premium news server or VMs free one?
If your using a premium site you want to use an indexing site or global search site newzbin costs 25p per week merlinsportal is free(I post here) and search sites include binsearch and bintube. Of course please only use these engines to find legitimate none copyright material ;)

probably not mate i haven't used the ntl servers in quite some time but they carry hardly any decent binaries so if you are after the good stuff;) then you will have to get a premium news server account which will run you about 8 pounds a month..
