View Full Version : 20mb with this modem?
I read that It's not possible to achieve 20mb speed if ou have a certain modem, I had a look at this page:
http://allyours.virginmedia.com/cgi-bin/formactions/uplift_customer.pl
But my modem isn't on their! It is unbranded with the following serial number on it E08C007, does anyone know if it's good enough for a 20mb connection?
Saying that, my connection speed is fecking woeful today:

I don't know when Swindon, where I live, was changed to 20mb but do I need to restart my modem to see and concernable speed difference?
Thanks
dont use speed tests
test your speeds from gamefile.virginmedia.com
all the modems from ntl/telewest are listed on the site, so you must be able to tell by looking at them what one you have.
and yes a reboot is required to take it to 20mb speeds
make sure your not using usb connection
that URL doesnt work :(
I'm not using usb
my modem def isn't on that page :/
hmm hovered around 600 kbps :(
do 2 files at the same time and see if it gives 600 on each or splits that between them
have been downloading much the day?
remove the router, connect direct to pc, reboot all equipment
and then run the test again
routers can cause major problems with speeds
yeah some cant hack those speeds
ok, I am connected to straight from the modem now and i ran a speed test and it doesn't make any difference!
BUT
I downloaded a file from http://gamefiles.virginmedia.com and I got up to a speed of 1.6mbps :)
so i guess its the router :(
yeah, there is routers that can handle the speed so if u are getting a replacement just make sure its one capable of maintaining the speeds.
even check if the one uv just now is capable and just complain to the routers helpline/store and u never no, might have a bit of luck with gettin a free replacement or somethin
Ok, maybe someone can clear this up for me. If I am so say on a 20mb connection, should i therefore be able to download a file at 20mb a sec? As if this the case I can only currently download at best 1.6mbps then there must be something drastically wrong?

Is that 1.6 mBITS or 1.6 mBYTES if the latter then allowing for overhead your pretty close to 20 meg. Google for NetMeter, it's a free download, you can then see exactly what is going both in & out of your pc in terms of bandwidth.

By the way I have the same modem as yourself and it does work. The reason it isn't listed is because it is the newest on offer and is the one you will receive if you have any of the ones listed on the Virgin site.
