View Full Version : Traffic management only 4hrs?

I'm on the 4Mb broadband and exceeded the 750Mb cap approx 28hrs ago. I haven't been on the internet much since, just a bit of browsing a few hours ago but I noticed it was slow. Running the speed check on this site several times I consistently get 1.89Mb now. It was always consistently 3.83Mb before. I've tried rebooting modem and pc but still the same result. I don't mind a 4hr rap on the knuckles but 28hrs (and counting) is a bit excessive!

Anyone else had the same experience? Are VM trying to make 25p a minute out of me as punishment?:(

Mr Angry had a good theory about this... as you may know, it's possible for certain miscreants to clone cable modems, which makes them appear on the network using someone else's identification. The potential problem is that the cheeky scamp could clone your modem, then download so much data that it triggers the traffic management to be activated... which affects not only the cloned modem, but your modem too. So, even though you've not downloaded in excess of the daily limit, you are being throttled.

However, I'm not clued up enough about how VM's bandwidth throttling system works to know whether this is indeed a likely scenario - and I don't fancy spending 25p p/minute calling VM to find out (not that I think the people answering the phones would be privy to this kind of info, in any case).

Cloning is always a possibility but I don't really know too much about the subject. I've had the same modem for 7 yrs so not sure how feasible that is? More likely that whatever "switch" was flicked to throttle me, it needs to be "switched off" again. I would have thought it was automatic but something seems to have gone wrong in my case:(

what?

it should automatically switch off the throttle after 4 hours and ive never heard of it nor doing this, not no if its possible tho i would doubt it.

with regards to teh cloning there is already a thread which goes into quite a lot of detail on it and if u know you have def been down for the full 28 hours it cant be that that is causing the issue, as obv no throttling should occur between 12 and 4.

might be worth, just to be certain, checking your speed on downloads from gamefiles.virginmedia.com which can then confirm 100% that u r having slow speeds.
also just do a quick spyware check and have a check on the status line for any raised issue in your area (0800 561 0061)

rmr if it does turn out to be anythin on vm's side (unless listed on status line) u will be refunded, though i really doubt it is the stm that has been affecting you for 28 hours

I've just run 2 spyware checking progs and nothing unusual except a few tracking cookies. I had already checked the status page and nothing showing. Tried downloading several large files from gamefiles.virginmedia.com and they consistently download at 236Kb\s. I think its fairly conclusive that I'm on the 2Mb tier just not sure why after this length of time? Not entirely sure I exceeded the 750Mb cap either.

4 possibilities spring to mind:-

1) I've been traffic managed and for some reason this has not been switched off
2) For some other unknown reason I've been downgraded to the 2Mb tier
3) The kids and\or other half have been downloading mega files whilst I was at work (unlikely)
4) Modem been cloned? Haven't got a clue about this so will have to read the thread

Any other possibilities or ideas please let me know

Think I could be on the phone 2morrow taking a 25p per min hit!

2) For some other unknown reason I've been downgraded to the 2Mb tierCheck the modem config file to see what you're configured to.

Browse to http://192.168.100.1 log on with root/root and click Operation Config. Look at the value for Maximum Downstream Data Rate - that'll tell you if it's 2Mb or 4Mb on the modem itself.

Unfortunately all I get is "The page cannot be displayed"

Seem to remember someone saying in another thread that it wont work with a Terayon Terajet modem. Tried to get it changed several times but VM dont want to know.

Thanks to all who have contributed so far, your thoughts and ideas are appreciated

Just about to go to bed and thought I'd have one last speed check. Eureka!! Back up to 3.87Mbps. Been at work from 2pm and didn't get home till 11pm so will have to find out what the clan were up to whilst I was earning a crust! Hope the boy has not been at the porn again :erm:
