Hi,

I've been with Virgin / Telewest for years, probably since they started and cable was available in my area (L22 - Liverpool).

Whenever I have been on the top service, be it 4mb, 10mb or now 20mb, it has always suffered. Being on the Medium service has always seemed better to me, it’s like everyone goes for the XL these days!

2 days ago I had the VIP package installed. Now this was an almightily hassle!
Firstly the engineer came in, changed the old box with V+ box, and walked out whilst my gf was sat in the back room, and he left the front door wide open without even letting my girlfriend know he had finished!
To top that off, he hadn't even installed the V+ box! I could view the channels and hear them, and change channel, but no onscreen display was there. After phoning VM up and demanding that an engineer was send back they agreed. They said an engineer would be here at 8pm.
As expected no engineer turned up and no phone call to apologise or anything! But after having a look myself it seemed he had plugged the scart cable into the wrong socket on the back of the V+ box, there are 2, one of them worked and 1 didn't, no idea why but I am sure someone will know!

The next day Virgin still hadn;t phoned about the engineer not turning up and he didn't even arrive! So after phoning Virgin up and saying I had fixed it myself they constantly apologised over the phone but pointlessly. Its like shooting someone and then saying sorry, it doesn't make it better, it gets seriously annoying after saying it 50 times!

The next thing on the agenda was the internet being upgraded from L to XL.
The salesman over the phone said it would be 20mb. It isn't, I will provide a picture at the bottom of this post with pings, tracert's, download speeds and my modem page.
If I phone 150 I get told they know nothing and I have to phone 0906 number at 25p/min (RIDICULOUS!!) and even when I phone them all they do is sit on the other end of the phone reading off a screen and come to the conclusion that I have spyware on my laptop or that maintenance is ongoing in my area and to check the status page. I checked the staus page, and phoned up the 0800 number to check status over the phone, and nothing is mentioned about my area/Liverpool at all.

At this rate I ahve a good mind to cancel the VIP package as the service is completely ridiculous especially after the engineer not doing his job and the internet being stupidly slow for a supposed 20mb.

I am posting this here in the hope that some people know any more information about why my internet is slow or anything to speed it up as the Indian call centres seem to know nothing , and so does everyone on 150.

Thanks, and seriously hope you can help me otherwise I'm off to Sky+ with a stupid dish outside my house :/

Test 1: 1024K took 2359 ms = 434.1 KB/sec, approx 3577 Kbps, 3.49 Mbps
Test 2: 1024K took 2860 ms = 358 KB/sec, approx 2950 Kbps, 2.88 Mbps
Test 3: 1024K took 2109 ms = 485.5 KB/sec, approx 4001 Kbps, 3.91 Mbps
Test 4: 2048K took 2484 ms = 824.5 KB/sec, approx 6794 Kbps, 6.63 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4331 Kbps, 4.23 Mbps

I tried to download 2 files from the virgin media game files HTTP and I was getting a total of around 100kb/sec. But when I used FTP instead of HTTP my total for the same 2 files was 700kb/sec, any reason why FTP is alot faster than HTTP ?

Is it from the same website, like http://google.com and ftp://google.com or are they different sites?

As for the speed issues, we are all suffering and our cries don't seem as if they being heard. I'm fed up with people who don't know what they are talking about and refuse to accept the problem is with VM and not my computer. I want to speak with someone who actually knows what they are talking about.

Heres the odd thing I also live in L22 and my speeds are fine. I get 20Mbit before peak period and about 15-17Mbit during peak periods.

evilmonkey, what UBR are you on ?

Ive been told that some other UBR's seem to be fine but I can't phone up and ask to be changed unfortunately :/

Contacted Technical Assistant via newsgroup so hopefully they can help me more than the call centres who tell me nothing except "I apologise"

Im on UBR07live cable3/1

they can only change your upstream channel not your UBR or cable. changing cables and UBRs is a messy business.

Hey all, Im in rainhill, and since being upgraded ive not once got past 1.40 mbs , on newsgroups or anything. Done all the usual stuff to no avail, Cant be bothered ringin up cos im sick of speaking to foreign people who have no idea what day it is . I know they are only doing their job, but they cant sympathise and i cant bloody understand them !!!. Ive tried my downloads at all times, and the only times it changes are if ive downloaded a bit , then its BOOM, right onto 5mb instead of 20, or 10, or 11.5 and a half .three quarters shared by 6 multiplied by 15 to a percentage of 3 !!!

Just my two penneth worth

If you check the status page the is a problem with slow download speeds on the 20mb so that would explain the reason why I am guessing keep and on eye on this
