View Full Version : My right buttock

I posted this on another forum, but didn't get much help. Let's see how we do here...

I've recently taken possession of an automatic diesel MPV (which I'm about to convert to run on SVO, but that is another story), and have taken the wife and kids for a few long-ish (hour or so) journeys to test her out (the car, not the wife...)

However, I've noticed a pain at the top of the back of my right thigh. It is a bit sore while driving, and takes a day to recover. Has anyone else had this problem? I've moved the seat all the way back and am sitting as upright as possible.

She is a lovely old girl, but at the moment she is being a pain in the ... buttock. Can anyone help?

Hmmm, I could be wrong (seeing as I'm in no way medically trained :disturbd: ), but that sounds exactly the same as what happened to me - when I went to the doctor about it (because it got gradually worse), he diagnosed sciatica. Might be worth going to your doctor and seeing what he's got to say.

Mine prescribed me some painkillers and anti-inflammatories which have really helped - it comes back on occasion, but nowhere near as bad as it was...

EDIT: Here's a bit of info - hope it helps :)

It's very hard to diagnose this type of thing without actually being able to prod the patient.....but here goes nothing :disturbd::D
Is the pain above or below the bottom of your buttock (gluteal crease)?
What makes it worse (other than driving that car)? (sitting/standing/bending/coughing/lifting/twisting etc)
What makes it better? (sitting/standing/bending/coughing/lifting/twisting etc)
Does it hurt in bed? If so, in what position?
What is the pain like? Sharp/dull/aching/burning/stabbing?
Are you getting any symptoms further down the leg or into the foot?

......that'll do for now:)

Is the pain above or below the bottom of your buttock (gluteal crease)? Just below
What makes it worse (other than driving that car)? (sitting/standing/bending/coughing/lifting/twisting etc) Only happens during/after driving
What makes it better? (sitting/standing/bending/coughing/lifting/twisting etc) Stretching helps a bit
Does it hurt in bed? If so, in what position? No
What is the pain like? Sharp/dull/aching/burning/stabbing? Dull, like a strained muscle
Are you getting any symptoms further down the leg or into the foot? Not yet!

I hope not!

My wife suggests that I keep the wallet at home with her...

Hmmm....with the symptoms you have at the moment, it could be ischial bursitis or a hamstring injury. I'd have to prod the area to locate exactly where the pain is. That's not to say it couldn't be any number of other things but those are the two common injuries in that area.
That fact that stretching it helps tends to suggest that it's a hamstring injury but it's hard to tell for sure without examining it.
More questions:
How old are you?
Whats your occupation?
Do you get any associated low back pain?

You'll be pleased to learn that the symptoms are getting better. I think the seat is a bit lower than I'm used to, so my thigh doesn't rest on anything whilst driving. A cushion under my right leg seems to have done the trick. Either that, or my leg muscles are getting used to the new driving position.

Thanks for your advice. Greenies all around.

A colleague found out his pelvis was slightly tilted because of his driving position, moving a click forward after seeing a specialist to sort him out made all the difference.
It was from extending his leg to use one of the pedals.
Made him walk slightly lopsided too it was that bad, though he hadn't noticed as there was no pain.
He'd have to use a specific chair at work before it was sorted, then realised the reason why the chair helped was because it was lopsided too :D
