Hi,

Recently my Easynews account has slowed right down when downloading "stuff"

Is this VM or just the Easynews servers?

Thanks,

steve

Looking at all the threads about poor speeds it could be VM just a guess:)

- What area?

- Have you noticed any loss of speed with any other form of bandwidth usage?

- Does it come back to normal speeds after peek times?

Edit:- By all mean logically it probably might be Virgin though there are still areas that are rock solid with no shaping.

NNTP or web??? easynews NNTP server clusters have always been poor they concentrate on the HTTP protacol. If your NTTP and happy using indexes and nzbs and of course download over 20 gig a month go Giganews

Both VM and Easynews use cheapo, congested routing....................
However Easynews are relatively good value, they charge no extra for SSL and also allow unlimited connections.
Giga or Easy? Just depends on how deep your pockets are I think.

usenetserver.com have much better rates IMHO

Ive tried 98% of all "Major" Usenet Providers on web including the above.

Giganews is by far the best, best speed, best retention.

The most expensive tho, but im a believer in you get what you pay for, you pay peanuts you get monkeys!!

Anyone for a banana? :p:

12.50 is all that giganews cost me this month cuz of the exchange rates and it has been rock steady for me since 05

I'd go for newshosting seeing they are so cheap and unlimited. I've always maxed out 10mbit on them even though i use more than the specified number of threads that they allow. But at the end of the day it's the cost that's important to me and £8 a month is pretty good and can always download what i want.

[edit]

Just discovered newshosting now has a euro server which i can max out with 8 connections and you can login to it using 69.16.176.254.

Depends on the time of day. Connecting to Easynews, I can max my 4Mb connection between 12midnight and 4pm, other times its maybe 1Mb-2Mb.

I'm in the Ipswich area...

Tonight for instances my download went to as low as 3mb and up to 10mb with in the hour; I haven't seen anything over 10mb even though my area "has been enabled" and my router config does say 20mb now..

Cant beat giganews with 120days retention, always maxes me out as well :)

At the moment i cannot fault Giganews and i can max my usage at anytime that i need to with them. I certainly get my money's worth out of them.;)

I'm a recent convert to 'paid for' news servers, I've only tried giganews european server, so far, which has been 100% , for me :)

giganews for me, only some times it drops down to 5.5 ish MB but it is normally rock steady at 9.4MB but that must be down to VM :) :)

Newshosting all the way, £8.00 a month, speed is constantly 1.15MB/sec (1150kb/sec)+ using only half the bots allocated, should mean 2.3MB/sec+ when on VM 20mb! (or 500kb/sec from 4-12 ¬_¬)

Been using Easynews now for many years

Only tip is to use the webserver instead of the news server
and use a download manager like REGET ( as per easynew's recommendation)
and you should get full download speed continuous - I do.

Hey, and with the exchange rate as it is, and the extra they give you for
long service - I get approx 27 Gig a month for £ 5

Major bargain

Another vote for Giganews, always spot on speed, never had any problems and I feel its worth paying a little extra for that

zing_deleted
06-05-2007, 11:20
but with easynews you only get 22 gig (as long as you do the survey) and the new time server bonus for your fiver at todays exchange

How much would you get for a fiver with Giganews then ?

giganews is the boy, get the Diamond package with 20 SSL connections on port 443 - you can't go wrong.

oh about the same but you get no other options on EN I campained for years for a unlimited NNTP account with them not by saying More Gigs in the survey but by drawing up proposals on how it work work in their favour and ideas on how to implement it

Just had a quick look at the site....

Do they not have a webserver - cant see any mention of any !!!!
It makes things so much easier - especially now easynews have the
Autounrar downloads.

zing_deleted
06-05-2007, 11:56
Easynews is just to limited by the time you downloaded over 65 gig a month you have spent more than unlimited giganews download over 85 and its cost you 6 or 7 quid more download 125 say and its cost you twice as much

denluk
06-05-2007, 12:14
I think why I must like it is because I'm not so much of a "Mega" downloader
like that lol.
The 27 Gig a month does me just fine at mo, looks like a good option if I
get worse tho :-)

If you are on easynews and you dont use all your gigs each month, stay there.
But if you find youeself purchasing extra gigs, it's time to find an unlimited account.

I was with newshosting, started with 45days retention($14.99) and went up to 75day retenting ($19.99pm) but I didnt know Giganews went up to 120 days - how long has that been gooing on!! Time to move!

The problem with leaving easynews is that their web interface is excellent. But find a good nzb site and a good search site and your up and running again!

I'm with giganews. Fine for me.

I'm with Giganews because of their high retention (120 days). Retention is how long something remains on the server after someone has uploaded it. If you only want to download the latest, most popular whatever, then its not an issue. If you want to download less popular, or older material then definitely go with the highest retention rate (currently Giganews).

newzbin has a good raw global search of usenet not indexs

For that kind of usage I'd use a non-expiring block account, www.usenet-news.net do 100GB for $32 (~£16), and also use a newsreader that allows you to use multiple servers with priority, so that it would only download stuff off the block account that wasn't on the Virgin server.

I use VM's own Newsgroup access at the moment, might not have the best retention but I check it out every day and it nearly always maxes my 10MBit out.

They offer a limited number of groups, compared to the commercial news providers, though, and don't support NZB files.

I agree that when I have used them the speed has been fine :)
