Hello.

As other people are starting the 'X area bad speeds' threads, I thought I would do one for people using the Luton exchange/whateverit'scalled.

I am fine most of the day, getting 9-10mb speeds. But around 6pm, it drops dramatically, down to 0.5-2mb. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now.
It is definately not traffic shaping, because it is such a low speed (not 5mb), and NetMeter shows how much I have downloaded - only 2 days have I gone over 3gb a day, and that is the entire day, not just peak hours.

Does anyone else using the Luton server/whatever have speed problems? If so, could you please post your speet trest results (using this tester (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/speed.php)) at around 7pm?

not sure if I'm on the Luton server but will look when I get home tonight - normally when I do the speed test from this website I usually max out at 9.5 - 9.8 mb

Mines rubbish between 5.30 - 12 midnight and has been for at least 5 weeks.

I'm in Letchworth on the Luton hub also

I'm in luton and during the day get around 9.5Mb and in the evenings around 8Mb so no real issues for me... thankfully.

Oh, I should add that until about 2 weeks ago, my speed was fine, day or night.
I have had the connection since January.

Have you phoned faults?

Have you phoned faults?

No. There are so many people with the problem, there really isn't any point.
Not to be rude to those here who work for VM - they are usually very helpful - but the people I've had to deal with have been useless over the phone. It seems the problem could be to do with the upgrade, but with Luton on the 'to be confirmed' list, I don't want this problem to be around until we are upgraded.

are you sure it's not worth a phone call to faults?

Mechanicus

No, not really. As I said, there are numerous threads opening about people with the exact same problem as I have. Either the servers have become congested overnight, or they have done something while upgrading everything - either on purpose or by accident.

Damn test is never right for me. You need to phone faults, if one person complains its just there system at fault, its not until they get a few reporing it that they then realise there is a fault.

Spot on... keep hammering away, get on the phone and give them some grief! I's going to be either an SNR issue in your area or some perticularly heavy users either way it can be sorted... with persistance... best of luck.

My connection (Harpenden) is very flaky - and it slows down in the evenings.
Also, Speedtest.Net is showing ping times of over 700ms - although I wonder if my firewall / router might be confusing it in some way.

If it was a fault, say oversubscription, would the upload speed be affected too?
Because, even when the download speeds get really slow, the upload seems to stay normal.
