AFAIK all modems supplied by VM are the black 255 unless your area has some of the blue 250's hanging around and they are both capable of handling speeds in excess of VM currently offer.

(sorry pay for a new one)
It says on the web site that if you fit it yourself it's free, or you can pay £25 for an engineer to fit it for you

You'll usually get an ntl 250 (small blue modem) or a VM 255 (small black modem)

They are both exactly the same modems, with different branding on it and both able to recieve speeds of 38Mbps.

The 255 is ethernet only :)

Forgive me if I missed the answer in the thread above, but are we saying that the quaint old Ambit NTL:Home 100 silver modem is not good for the 20Mb deal? Is what I have, very old, was on the 128k service when it became available. I remember when all this was fields.

Thats correct.

Apparently they will tell you it will work fine, but it doesn't. To be on the safe side, modems that should work properly are the ntl 250 (little blue modem) or the new VM 255 (little black modem) both able to recieve up to 38Mbps

What's the procedure for asking for a modem swap, do I just ask out right (phoning 151) or do I have to make up an excuse other than its old?

Edit:
found my answer in the next thread I looked at.
