Just out of interest, considering the "updates" to the network were supposed to have finished earlier, has anyone been up'ed to the 20mbit/s yet? I haven't - I expect to have to wait until the 1st May, but what the heck.

Was getting 15mbps this morning, in evenings though it falls to 4.6 constant max so some sort of traffic shaping going on I think, rockets back to 12-14 around midnight ish

nice speeds though, I like it a lot when it works :)

I`ve had up to about 15mb in Kidbrooke this last few days but not seen it hit 20 yet...In fact thats just with the bbmax test i get that pretty consistantly.

The speedtest.net tests vary though from 4mb up to 11mb depending on server and time of day.

I`m wondering if this little modem is even capable of more than the 15 i`ve seen so far(NTL 120.).

Well, just got myself installed (after moving house), and I can happily say - That is fast!!!

www.speedtest.net (http://www.speedtest.net) - terrible, seeing 7Mbit, but if I go to jolt and download from their fast server then I see a nice round 2.4MB/s.... (measured with dumeter), its sweet....

Hope you are all up on 20Mbit soon :)

what is a forced firmware uppgrade for a cable modem??

When I was upgraded from whatever it was to 10Megs NTL pushed the modem file and the new rate appeared overnight. They didn't do that this time and I found it updated after a power off\on.

Re: the remark that a lot of people will not notice much improvement (another poster)..... When NTL upgraded to 10 megs there is no doubt in my mind that we were previously way behind the speed curve and the difference was dramatic. I have played, hunt the fast server, for Linux distros, graphics drivers etc, and have found very few that aren't limited from the server end.

You've got 17.6Mbps in one test, you sure it's not been upgraded?

Either way, you sig is a little off "disgusting" - for £2 more your getting another 10Mbps down and a few more up. Unless you plan on doing major p2p or running your own hosting it's more than enough.

What modem do you have? and what config file is the cable modem using? Is it using similar naming system? ie: cm-20480-768 ??

99.9% sure surfboard sb4100 can handle 20mbit fine...even upto 38mbit but if theyre offerring a upgrade for free then that can only be a good thing what with the 50mbit trials in the future...if not free then i advise you wait to confirm sb4100 can handle your 20mbit..i see no reason why it cant...38mbit down and 10mbit up max

I'll be interested to hear from anyone in Manchester who gets the upgrade and sees a significant increase. I noticed in the small print that they have a "get out clause" for areas with capacity problems.

Seeing as I live in a student heavy area, and my speeds barely go above 500k of an evening I suspect I will still be paying the same for people getting possibly 4 times the speed!

Does anyone know if the NTL:200 modem is capable of 20meg by the way? Cheers.

Edit: just seena thread stating that the modem may be up to the job. Time will tell.

Yeah, I think you become used to the bandwidth and after a while it's not so special. I wouldn't mind being on a 56kbit/s modem (not on my virgin connection) so when I decide to connect back up to virgin I can appreciate the extra bandwidth available...:D

Kinda funny, my internet died on the stroke of midnight and only just came back on. Still on 10Mb though.

Just thankful it came back. I was busy doing stuff when it went off. Grrrr!

Exact same thing here in Leicester, bang on 12, only it was off for 20min, then came back just as sudden as it went, and still 10mb

Well my connection is on lei3.cable.ntl.com so that'll be why we got the same thing. Might be maintenance getting done on our part.

I'm done what I'm doing now so I don't care if it goes off again. :D

If memory serves a 120 can handle 12-14mb max.

And to those people jammy enough to be posting 20mb results, please post your location as well. :)

It's all possible Jessica Alba, Tina O Brien and Jennifer Ellison could turn up at my door butt naked for a night of fun, and I could win lottery and be given a Ferrari F430 in black with tanned leather seats.

well unfortunatly the roll out requires a modem reboot and this isnt being triggered remotely. This is VM's only error in this I think as the only way you will get the config is by a manual reboot. The only reason im awake is cuz my o2 line was dodgy yesterday and got all my texts from yesterday evening and afternoon all arrive together at 06.30 which woke me up :(

If I was in charge at VM I would do the roll out on the qt tell no one justlet the leaks and rumours go round then once the configs been sent to everyone then tell customers. I would do this to stop all the hassle about why does such and such have it when I dont as this is silly.
