View Full Version : Less than 1Mbit/s on Luton network

I am on the Luton network and recently my 10Mbit service has been giving me less that 1Mbit/s downlink speed; today it has varied between 500 and 800kbit/s.

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/117735809348161132314.html

Any ideas what's going on? The modem appears to be configured correctly so it is a little mysterious...

AFAIK, I am on the Luton network too, being in Letchworth. I have started a thread, and it sounds like I have the exact same problem as you.

Tell me, did your BB and/or TV go down on the 18th? I think it was about 4:30pm.

I'm getting same in Bishopton aswell. Really poor these days. Used to be rock solid.

I haven't got TV with Virgin anymore (was very pleased to see it go to be honest) - but I have noticed it is incredibly slow at the moment. Absymal, infact.

Interestingly, the activity lights on the modem are strangely silent unless I am actually doing something with the PC - until recently they were flashing pretty much all the time (presumably port scanners etc. probing the local network). I wonder if they have added any filtering or reconfigured the switches in any way....

Have you managed to talk to anybody in tech support about this yet?

I'm in Letchworth too

My speed is alway rubbish from 5pm till 12pm. It's been like that for a good 4 or 5 weeks now:td:

http://www.thinkbroadband.com/speedtest/results/id/1177359142179340522.html

No problems at any other time so I'm guessing it's something that's done on purpose:Yikes:

Got issues here too with speeds etc. Rainham Essex area. Looks like network issues or work being done again.

kelraine
23-04-2007, 21:25
Yes.. it's actually rather ironic - broadband is the -one thing- that NTL seemed to do rather well (probably because they don't actually run it) - I've been getting fast, reliable broadband for over a year - and then Virgin come along and suddenly it screws up.

What a coincidence.

Paul K
23-04-2007, 21:27
You have to be kidding if you think the NTL network was all sweetness and light :erm: Since there are major upgrades going on, proxies (maybe) getting removed etc you can expect things like this to happen.

McMav

for near 5 weeks on and off now.

Paul K
23-04-2007, 21:33
You do realise these forums exist because of issues like this don't you? The timing may well be a mixture of coincidence/ network hardware issues/ issues caused due to network upgrades/ work being carried out on the proxies etc. Have you called VM to find out what is going on in your case?

My 4mb's been going fine recently - I've been seeing speeds of 3.8/3.9mb most of the time. But today it's shot down to 1.1mb, which is odd.

I'm in Flitwick, by the way.

having same problem in Potters Bar as well, it makes me worry :disturbd:

Mechanicus
23-04-2007, 22:11
I would not mind if it is because of the upgrade, but it would have been nice if we had prior warning of it.

Some kind of "Due to our upgrading the service to 20mb, there may be speed issues blah blah blah blah".

Can't get to the server status page so don't know if anything is mentioned there.

Where is it supposed to be?

Edit:: Found it.
This one says everything is fine: http://gps.virgin.net/service-announcements/status
But this one says outages: http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/ServiceStatus.aspx?category=portal&app=status

I am more inclined to believe the second one.

The first status link seems to be for Virgin.Net ADSL customers I think?

The second link doesn't mention any areas served by the Luton network (though Hatfield may be?) Luton is mentioned in the work for last week though...

This caught my eye:

...Wednesday the 18th April...

This was wehen my TV and BB cut out. It seems since then I have had these problems. Coincidence, or something more...?

I'm in the Greenock area (renfrewshire) and I just had an HDU fitted because of my poor signals. the Signals have got better but Im getting awful speeds.. Some times 180K and pings to Belfast servers of 999ms. Something very bad going on.

My connection has been particularly slow since last Saturday (21st), and in the evenings it's most noticable.

I've been achieving speeds of around 5mb during evenings, and sometimes as low as 700kbit/s. Perhaps the throttling is being imposed before the service actually improves. Ping times are roughly the same, though.

Just spotted this in server status page

Server updates in Renfrew, Peterbrough and the surrounding areas will result in a loss of Cable Modem provisioning.

Thats for Wednesday lets se if that helps improve things. I'm serviced by Renfrew.

Mechanicus

I think I might still have a problem, but cannot confirm it yet.

It said this morning (8:15am) that I was getting 9.0-9.5mb.
A check now shows 7.5-8.5mb.

It is definately not as bad as yesterday, where I had a speed of 2.0-3.5mb at this same time of day.

I find the London server VERY unreliable. Try the dublin one, and then post again. I also get around 3 - 4 mb/s on the london server whilst getting 6 - 9mb/s on the dublin server.

Tue, 24 Apr 2007 18:32:06 UTC

1st 512K took 2463 ms = 207.9 KB/sec, approx 1713 Kbps, 1.67 Mbps

4th 512K took 3845 ms = 133.2 KB/sec, approx 1098 Kbps, 1.07 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1946 Kbps, 1.9 Mbps

and then...

Which one do you believe?

Mechanicus

What ones is that second one ferretuk? Got a link?

Giganews Euro speedtest is showing ~1700Kbps, about the same as I get to their US server

I'm still hovering around 1Mbit/s - I reckon there's a lot of latency too, given how long it seems to take to load a page.
Not good. I hope they sort it out very soon.

Think a lot of it's sorted now. My connection stopped playing up last night (touch wood, once again). Pings dropped to 5ms in HL2DM! 5ms! Very pleased with that.

Also very tired - haven't been to sleep all night, better get some sleep, after one more speedtest :P

Possibly just the service outages causing a loss of performance?

Still exactly the same in Chester http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/results.php?t=1177746284&v=1217175
