Psychologist Dr Aric Sigman argues that children's TV viewing should be severely restricted:

Children under three: No screen exposure
Ages three to seven: 30 minutes to one hour per day
Ages seven to 12: One hour per day
Ages 12 to 15: One and-a-half hours a day
Ages 16 and over: Two hours

According to Dr Sigman, the consequences of too much TV include:

attention span problems
difficulty in sleeping
behavioural problems
increased obesity

I saw this before I left for work this morning, this guy is a t*t, My sister has two kid 6 & 3.

My niece who would watch Telletubbies, Dora, Ballymory and others such programmes, she is top of her class in read in year one and half way up reading in year twos group.

Also my sister lets them watch TV while she make there food to keep them out of her way.

I'd tend to agree and really wish children did go out more.
I think there is also the issue that children stay up too late and watch things which are not at all suitable for them.

Parents allowing televisions in childrens rooms is one thing I think should be banned.

I think that other factors play a part..Like how much TV is watched with mum or dad or in other words is the TV only ever used as a childminder?Do parents discuss what is watched with their children.do parents allow the child to have the remote so they learn to constantly flick channels?Do the family do other things together?Do they turn the TV off during meal times and actually sit round a table together? Is the TV ever switched off at any point during the day or is it on full time.Do mum and dad do other things besides watch TV such as reading?

In the 90s a Dr Aric Sigman was the resident agony-uncle on BBC's Live and Kicking, a Saturday morning programme aimed at children. Same guy. Yes.

The only time i watch TV is at Dinner Time, and if there's anything on that takes my fancy, otherwise im either online, or playing on the 360.

Well Wayne you are no longer a child..you are officially an adult...so you don't need to offer excuses. ;)

Thats still time in front of a screen..........we try to limit how much time our kids are in front of a screen (and especially the TV screen)

"Increased Obesity" - Duh! If you sit watching TV for 18 hours a day that's going to be an obvious side-effect :)

the guy is an idiot

its not tv its never just 1 thing

the problem is the parents they need to take an active role taking kids to the park and playing games with them from birth ( well at least as soon as they can do more than sleep and feed ;) ) to as old as they will still play with you .

my kids will sit and watch tv and play on thier play station for ages but give them the chance to go to the park or one of those indoor play areas and they jump at the chance , this isnt because they are diferent to other kids but because they have been brought up doing those things.

obesity isnt caused by tv, its caused by sitting on your ass not playing any sport. this "doctor" bloke should know that.

as a father of four children (15,12,4,2) and not being a psychologist,i could have told you that!!! i have to agree with him wholeheartedly,i catch my young ones stood right in front of the 32" lcd screen when i nip to the kitchen and come back in its almost like a scene from poltergeist!!! :Yikes:

The garbage they show on tv these days is more likely to be the cause behavioural problems than the length of time it's watched.

As for obesity... more schools should be promoting proper, competitive sport and cardiovascular exercise rather than faffing around indoors on gym apparatus which seems to be the prevelant situation at my 12 year old's school.

I do agree with this, TV viewing should be restricted for the children and they should be encouraged to be engaged in outdoor activities. It is not the TV alone the increased addiction of children towards the internet also needs some vigil. We all are aware that the childhood obesity problems are gradually increasing at an alarming rate, and if nothing is done in time things are sure to go out of hands.

nonsense

maybe they should restrict school to they spend an inordinate time sitting there too

really this has nothing to do with tv or the internet or even the play station etc.

its parents not playing with and taking part in their kids lives that's the problem.

these silly statements just give those parents who don't actively bring up their children another thing to blame instead of themselves
