I have a 4mb bb connection.
Can someone tell me if these speed test results are what you'd expect?

1st 512K took 1468 ms = 348.8 KB/sec, approx 2874 Kbps, 2.81 Mbps
2nd 512K took 1204 ms = 425.2 KB/sec, approx 3504 Kbps, 3.42 Mbps

I would say that they were not unreasonable.

I upgraded from 4Mb to 10Mb and have found that I can now only get 3-4'ish Mb on the PC but between 8-10Mb on my Apple Mac? If Virgin advertise a 10Mb service how fast should we expect [and pay for] and why the difference between my PC & Mac?

I had a similar problem, except the differences were between two PCs rather than a Mac and a PC. My problem seemed to stem from using a wireless router, apparently the network card in my older machine wasn't quite up to the job, and when I connected it directly to the modem via ethernet it connected at 8-10 meg just like the newer machine.

Tonight (just now) I download an MP3 file and bearly got 1.3Mb!! To be honest paying £35 per month for 10Mb and getting a 1/10th of that speed when I use it the most is not worth the money so I'll be downgrading back to 4Mb tomorrow. I can't see how they [VM] can charge that much for a service they cannot guarantee. I know they say "up to" but surely there has to be a lower limit to make it fair on the customer. It's almost a license to print money!

4meg for me

297.2 kilobits per second
1MB file download 28.2 seconds
Subjective rating Mediocre

Tried 3 times

In my opinion it seem's that certain website's are being screened along with applications & protocol's

I have also had e-mail's not getting to me when subscribing to web sites

Can someone explain this to me [in layman's language]? Last evening around 8-9pm I tried 3 different 3 speed tests, two of them gave more or less the same results ~9 meg and the other less than 1meg!! Why the difference?

I also tried downloading an MP3 file from LBC's website and got less than 100kb/sec.

So why do 2 speed tests give similar values and the other a totally different one? Is there any definitive way to test what the speed is that you are getting at any particular time?

im on 10 meg and download @ 1200kbps SOLID off of newsgroups
from gamefiles i get an average of 1132
i ping the bbc @ 19-23 ms
im on the uddingston ubr up in scotland just outside glasgow..

roll on 20 meg! 2400kbps!

Guys.. i dont know what u use for speedtesting..
but to be honest the amount of calls i get from customers that are using
the standard www. speed tests etc are all TOTAL Crap!...

They are not even 50% accurate

i tend to find sometimes the best way to do a speedcheck is downloading windows media player from the microsoft website..

doing a speedtest to one site will only tell you your speed to that site, so it may be slower or faster than what you'll see elsewhere
