I spoke to some one at NTL (VIRGIN MEDIA) customer relations dept this moring as i upgraded to 10mb for £10 they gave me £25 off the cost for 12 months they also said 4mb will become 10mb and the price for 10mb customers will go down soon and said once this happens i will have to call up again to upgrade to 20mb,

yes i was also on to virgin CS as they had charged me £15 for v box instead of £10 (as im on xl pack) and they too mentioned that my 4mb will soon become 10mb she mentioned that it will be 20mb for £37, 10mb for £19.99 and 4mb for £14.99. She didnt know when this would happen but i reckon around end may - june as they will want to bed in the 10 to 20mb upgrade first.

So why are they putting the price of 10mb up to £37.99 then to drop it to £19.99 how is this going to work. Is everyone on 10MB going to be upgraded to 20MB automatically (due to the price increase), and then they'll be able to downgrade back to the 10MB at the cheaper price if they wish?

10 MB for £19.99 now thats a good price!

I'm still only on 2mb with them, but i got a discount when i dropped my Tv and phone so its only £10 a month now. but I'd be happy with the above.

Any dates on this or is it starting May as has been talked about?

their not ! £37 is for 20mb . and yes i believe you will automatically get 20mb if you are currently on 10mb , not many people are going to moan about another £2 for double the potential download speed !

I can see this happening, but not until after the 20Mb uplift is my guess

Ooo great! I'd much rather have 10mbit for £25 a month.

I don't see them upgrading 2Mb & 4Mb customers until around August/September. If the rumours are true, I will be downgrading my L package to the M package. Even though it would be nice to have 10Mb I'd rather save money because 4Mb is plenty good enough for me.

I suspect that the words 'UP TO' may be written in bold for the new 20mb service. Peeps on here are complaining about 10mb service quite a lot. This new service could be the straw that breaks the cables back though, I myself have had a very good 4mb service which has very rarely let me down and generally have no outstanding complaints about NTL/Virgin media. I access the internet thru a Samsung set top box and believe that these only get to around 6-8 mb service but that is plenty for me, but again there will be others in the same boat as me that are not happy cos they are paying for 10 meg and getting just 6-8mb. When 20 is available though, all those paying £37 for it will be kicking off again. Ahhh the joys of being easily pleased :dozey: I just hope that these people that are complaining, realise that on the Good days that the high speeds work we are well off on virgin media. Well thats just MY opinion.:D

I presume they are upgrading the hardware where necessary?

Anything official on this?

i work in sales, so i will be directly selling these and there is NO OFFICIAL or UNOFFICIAL notification of this, the ONLY package that is changing is 10mb getting increased to 20MB with a £2 increase...i would love to know where customer care and retentions are getting their info as believe me there is nothing announced anywhere internally or externally about this, i have to say i would put a small wager on the fact that they are "guessing" these changes will take effect and i wish people wouldnt give out false hope

The word is that the £2 increase is only for those that only take the one package (broadband)
I have heard that there's no plans to change the 2 and 4, whether that's because it'll overload the network and blow it up I don't know ;)

Lols... Trust me to open my big mouth. I just posted all the good things about NTL/Virgin when.... you guessed it, all internet in my area (Wirral) went off. Might have known. now that I have removed foot from mouth i will be very careful in praising things beyond my control.:dunce:

I have been put on 10mb for £25 p/m "indefinitely"...

I took that to mean that eventually when 20mb kicks in, 10mb will be £25 p/m just reading between the lines.

Now this is the good news that all Virgin customers have been waiting for since the February rebrand!

I seriously doubt they will start the 4->10 during May... otherwise im pretty sure they would have mentioned this way back at the 20mb announce. Virgin need as much coverage as possible to stay ahead of the Sky vs Virgin war and announcing a seperate speed upgrade for two of their tiers at different times will acheive this (more coverage, more publicity etc), so i think the 4->10 may be announced sometime in May/June and the upgrades will start anywhere from July onwards.

If im wrong then waehae!

I'm not the sort of person to call retentions and demand more for less, but I do think that as a 4MB customer I am paying above the market rate and am very tempted to move sky. I could get 2MB and sky sports for less than I am paying now. Yes the service is good but I really wonder if it is worth the extra £5-10 a month. So news of an improved service for the same money is good news for me.

Bearing in mind they are a "communication" company..(snigger, snigger), can't they at least get all their punter facing bods to sing out of the same hymn-book??? If they can't, it just makes them look like crap.

Just a thought here but wouldn't it be better if Virgin offered the numbers like the other BB ISP's offer? they all have numbers like 8mb where we have 10mb, if they put out numbers like that and we got over it we would all sing the praises of Virgin. We all know that Virgin can do 10 mb but if i was told you can have 8mb BB and then found that i was actually getting 10mb i would be buzzing. I understand that the sales people always want to offer bigger better faster things but if they said that we were getting 8mb there would surely be less complaining threads like some of the ones that i have read. :dozey: ;)

Is there anyone at Virgin that can give me at least something approaching 4Mb? I've never even had 3Mb!

Try typing 192.168.100.1 into your address bar then click Configuration and change the upstream channel ID number to any other number between 1 and 6

But what about the problem of the Cable modems? I still have the Terayon TJ210 and 8mb is about the best it can ever do. VM can up the speeds as much as they like but until they have a policy of FREE upgrades to these older modems its not much value. BTW, when I signed with NTL in 2000 iI recall reading that the modem was their property - not mine, so I believe that they should sort out a free upgrade.

There is no upstream channel ID number that I could see, and there's also a dire warning:

This Cable Modem is the property of ntl: and must not be modified in any way. You will be responsible for any, claims, losses
damages or costs incurred by us arising out of, or in any way connected, with your use or misuse of this equipment.

1st 512K took 2353 ms = 217.6 KB/sec, approx 1793 Kbps, 1.75 Mbps
2nd 512K took 2083 ms = 245.8 KB/sec, approx 2025 Kbps, 1.98 Mbps
3rd 512K took 2153 ms = 237.8 KB/sec, approx 1959 Kbps, 1.91 Mbps
4th 512K took 2133 ms = 240 KB/sec, approx 1978 Kbps, 1.93 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 1939 Kbps, 1.89 Mbps

I had 4Mb until last month and my speed tests showed that I rarely got above 2.7Mbps. With going over to a V+ box meaning that I would get a separate modem I decided to go down to 2Mb. and see what happened. Not sure now whether it's worth going back up to 4Mb.
I may sound like I have some idea what I am talking about but I'm quite technically challenged when it comes to this type of decision and I would appreciate any advise you can give.

add.. I don't download a great deal.

If you ring Virgin and say your modem has a fault, they will send an enginner around, and he will just swap the modem for a newer one.

Just been told by CS that 4 meg will upgrade to 10meg around the 1st may.I was told by the Retentions dept that the 4mb would be upgraded on the 1st May too. But they said the speed would go up to 8mb, not the 10mb that others here have been told.

As it will take ages to upgrade all the 10mb customers, I see this as a tatic to keep customers, so take the info with a pinch of salt.
