First you need to get a program like Grabit (http://www.shemes.com/)
Then you need to enter a server name like
news.cable.ntlworld.com
then find the newsgroup you wish to subscribe to like alt.binaries.madcow.highspeed
then highlight the requires articles and right click, save to folder and away you go, on completion of download un-rar and enjoy, although quick-par (http://www.quickpar.org.uk/) may be a worthy addition to your program list and a paid for subscription to a news server like newshosting.com would be worth it and retention on NTL\VM is pretty poor to say the least.

There are other ways but this would probably be your quickest way to get into newsgroups

What do you mean how?
If you just want the server addresses, they're
Text only - text.news.blueyonder.co.uk
Binary - news.blueyonder.co.uk

does this help?

http://www.virginmedia.com/customers/newsgroups/

- setup very similar to adding a mail account (using Outlook Express), which I'm assuming will work, as described, with either ex Telewest or ex NTL customers. Just don't put your real email addy in when setting it up.

- if successful you will be able to download the list of groups & from there decide which ones you want to subscribe to

you don't need username/password on NTL news, so I'd be surprised if Telewest does???

in outlook express

click the 'tools' option

click 'accounts'

click 'add'

click 'news'

type your name (anything will do)

type in a false email addy

type in server address - no need for port number & leave 'required to logon' box UNchecked.

click finish

- you should get a message like 'do you want to download newsgroups from the server blah' - if it works you will then get a long list of the groups downloaded (failed for me as my IP isn't allowed on blueyonder, but you should be ok)

And the existence of the .nzb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NZB) file format, and the fact you don't upload(share) what you download like you do with torrents. ;)

Havnt had any problems yet, but Giga does have a better retention rate but its not as cheap as newshosting. As with everything in life you only get what you pay for ;)

Newshosting seems to be pretty stable on 10mbit these days. I wonder how it'll cope with 20mbit though without 30 connections open!

Here's a post i did last year although i 'think' you really need a paid news server like Newshosting (http://www.newshosting.com/) to take advantage of being able to download everything and not just what VM let you download.

Using .nzb files basically makes it pretty easy in a similar way that you use torrent files to get what you want.

http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/34146422-post6.html

1) Get a paid Newsgroup. (http://www.newshosting.com/) Approx £8 a month.

2) Go to a site like http://www.nzbsrus.com/ or http://nzbmatrix.com/ and get the .nzb file you want.

3) Open that file in a newsreader like http://www.shemes.com/ and download.

4) After the files are downloaded check them out with http://www.quickpar.org.uk/ and fix the files if needed.

5) Use winrar (http://www.rarlab.com/) or similar to rebuild the files to what you downloaded.

6) Enjoy!

For .NZB files I use http://v3.newzbin.com/

QuickPar from http://www.quickpar.org.uk/

not used Grabit, but the principles are the same, for most clients. You need to establish a connection from the client(Grabit) to a news server, in the first instance. A client will handle more than one server, but not usually at the same time,

the servers offered by ISPs are limited in content, and retention, but are free.

Subscribed news servers have much more content, but you have to pay to access them. Various sliding scales apply, usually based on how much content you can download in a given time. e.g. 2 Gig per 24hrs for $7.50 per month.

The search option & *.nzb file generation are, afaik, paid for seperately via newzbin - about 25p a week iirc???

using nzb files with ISP newsgroups is usually not worth it, as so many files tend to be incomplete.

Some news servers offer a limited free access, but availability varies - try searching on teranews or bubbanews - it is about 50MB per day max, which includes headers - and they may require your credit card details for a nominal registration fee - these are really only of use to anyone with a poorly retained/completed ISP server who is looking for 'fills' for multipart files.

I could probably afford a Giganews account if I ditched Sky movies - hmmm ;)

<edit> to acknowledge the much more useful info up there ^ ;)

Newshosting is around £8 a month and unlimited, also you can find free .nzb sites like the 2 i posted. :)

I found this site usefull when I wanted to find out more about newsgroups etc. http://www.slyck.com/ng.php

I use Astraweb news server as the pbdl (pay by download) option lets you pay for a fixed amount of download which can be used whenever you want, without commiting to monthly payments.

I use these free sites for searching the news groups:-

http://www.binsearch.info/
http://beta.binaries.nl/

Also www.newzleech.com is a good one if binsearch is a bit behind or something :)

Text only - text.news.blueyonder.co.uk

how come now all these are now under the VM badge users on say ex-C&W cant use the news.blueyonder.co.uk server, i notice news.blueyonder.co.uk have far more groups than news.ntlworld.com for instance.

it also appears that news.cable.ntlworld.com is seperate too, as that has sightly more groups (28748) than news.ntlworld.com (28736)

it cant be hard to now allow access to news.blueyonder.co.uk ,just add in the IP's range ?, so is there a trick you need to add such as putting in your me@ntlworld.com and email password into the fields to gain access? (nope ,didnt work).

why isnt there a virtual news.virginmedia.co.uk that mirrors all the seperate servers to one big V-server were we can all connect as we please, they have the VM groups on all of them i assume so why not the company wide VM virtual news.server too?.

SABnzbd is a top client - no need to bother with QuickPAR or WinRAR as it's all automatic and it runs in a browser window. There are also Greasemonkey scripts for Newzbin.
