How much do they shape the traffic? I haven't really downloaded anything for the last month, since I can't. VM seem to be throttling my connection and it's getting ridiculous. I get <1.5Mb through the day and <1Mb at night.

Mon, 12 Mar 2007 22:05:35 GMT

1st 512K took 5922 ms = 86.5 KB/sec, approx 713 Kbps, 0.7 Mbps
2nd 512K took 4734 ms = 108.2 KB/sec, approx 892 Kbps, 0.87 Mbps
3rd 512K took 6266 ms = 81.7 KB/sec, approx 673 Kbps, 0.66 Mbps
4th 512K took 6625 ms = 77.3 KB/sec, approx 637 Kbps, 0.62 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 729 Kbps, 0.71 Mbps

Really, what the hell are they doing?

What speed should you be getting?

10Mb.

I hope he says 10mb :)

WOW!! You posted at the same time as me, and It was 10mb, now there's a surprise!!

10Mb.

Are you sure its a connection issue? have you eliminated every other possibility?... Do you use router? Wireless? Spyware? What other software are you running? ect...

right now i am geting exactly 1 MB/s from giganews (capable of max but i limit it) so no issues here, have u tryed a download manager from a source such as microsoft ? if you dont want to do that, this is about thes best way of testing speed

http://www.giganews.com/performance.html

just tell me what you get off of that

janipewter

Absolutely sure. I've run spyware checks, virus checks, wired straight into the router, tried on 4 different computers (running different operating systems). Also tried it with modem direct to PC, using different cables, etc etc. All the same result, can never get over 1.5Mb.

I'm actually installing a fresh copy of Windows on another box right now to run a speedtest, just to make absolute sure.

Your speeds should be better than that. What do faults say?

Nevermind1994
13-03-2007, 00:30
Try this, its easier that reformatting.....

Turn cable modem off.
Turn PC off.
Connect PC into cable modem directly making sure you use ethernet cable.
Turn Cable modem on.
Turn PC on and press F8, select "safe mode with networking".
Go to http://www.speedtest.net/ and post results.

Traffic shaping that vm are trialing in your area is for 5 meg during peak times 4 - 12pm so if your getting low speeds in the day I suggest 151 opt 3
because that a fault hope all goes ok

Yep. You didnt say whether you were connected via a router or direct to modem. If on a router I had exactly the same issue. Rebooted Router then modem then PC. Back to 10mb via Newshosting USA. I just checked the Giganews link you provided I was getting the full 10mb.

Router normally but I did direct to modem, no difference.

Just called faults and they said there was a problem in January which is roughly when it started for me, however the guy said it had been fixed now and he couldn't understand why I was still affected. He put me through to customer services and the lady (who sounded like she was drunk and high) said she was sorry, and we have now been upgraded to the VIP package for no extra cost. She's also going to reimburse half of the internet cost from last month because of the **** service. Engineer is coming next Wednesday to fit our V+ box :D

I've just been 'upgraded' from L to XL.

yesterday 7 - 11pm I never got above 2.7MB/s
at 6:30 am I had go and got 6.6MB/s which is about what I'm expecting until my TJ210 gets replaced.

On the L service I got a consistent 3.7MB/s.

It's not exactly an upgrade is it :-( .

Is the traffic shaping really this bad.

Edit ---

Actually I may have take that back. Ignoring that every speed test I tried gave me similar results
of around 2.7MB/s. I've now kicked of five downloads of the gentoo live iso

http://gentoo.virginmedia.com/releases/x86/current/livecd/livecd-i686-installer-2006.1.iso

and they are all doing 200 KB/S , pushed it to six and get a total of 1008 KB/s.

Something to chew on.

How much are people downloading before they are subject to traffic shaping? And for how long does this shaping happen? Just until the next billing period?

I'm in Coventry and was amazed (and ashamed) that I DL 86gb from Giganews in 11 days. My DL speed has never dropped below 1MB/s.

If MY speed never drops below 1MB/s then that must mean that other users in my area must be getting full speed too. So that must mean that I am not causing a problem to anyone else therefore no matter how much I DL I should not be shaped (If indeed they do that in my area)?

Blueyonder are skimping on their international bandwidth costs. Penny pinching.

Especially to the USA.

Is anyone who is having problems on an IP address beginning 77 ?

It's my belief that these IP addresses are being given to heavy users and that this leads to their traffic being routed another (more congested) way.

I phoned up faults this minute ago on traffic shaping, and i was asking generally about my area and if its over subscribed etc, due to the poor speeds i get on a daily basis,
The dude on the phone told me at the moment there 56 people walking on a 10mb connection in your area, this is good, and i was like well today my connection is fine so im guessing it is good, then he was chatting about something about people logging on to servers at the same time?
How does this help me ? i know its a problem, but he didn't understand that my 2mb broadband was more stable than the 10mb i got now.
I was stating that i get 1.5mb on a daily basis and he tried telling me its my computer? wtf is all that about, i took my router out, i reinstalled XP so can can it be that ?
Anyway he didn't awnswer my over subscribed UBR connection thing and was just going your connection is fine, ring us when it drops again, but their gona tel me the same thing, so i still didn't get any where with them...
Oh he also told me that it's meant to drop between 5meg abd 8meg, during the day untill 12am, for anyone who wants to know. :)
I need help,

15-03-2007, 16:26
Pretty sure the 10meg drops by exactly 50%, ive tested it and its always half speed, round here anyway, its also 4pm-12am.

knet2020
15-03-2007, 20:27
Pretty sure the 10meg drops by exactly 50%, ive tested it and its always half speed, round here anyway, its also 4pm-12am.

As this now seems to be standard practice is the following applicable?

7 x 24 = 168 hours
7 x 8 = 56 hours

168 x 4 = 672 hours @ £35 = 0.052 per hour

56 x 4 = 224 hours = 224 x 0.052 = £11.64

So to allow for the fact you still get 5Mb it still works out that you are being charged over £5 per month for a non existent 'speed' however in terms of time it's still over 1/3 of the hours you could theoretically use the service.

The traffic shaping is on more speeds now I have seen the same on 4Mb too, in fact I have seen speedtests kick in the shaping.
