Wondering if anyone here can help me, over the past few weeks my speeds have been pretty bad but tonight its now down to 384kbps after I did a speed test!

It takes around 7 minutes to download 1 song off itunes which is very annoying especially when I pay £35.00 per month!

He changed somthing on my modem and rebooted it and its made my connection alot worse! At least I was getting around 2000kbps now Im only getting 400 maxium kbps is there anything I can change abck to whatever hes done? Pages are taking AGES to load!!

The indian whoever answered my call ran loads of tests on my modem he said there was no problems with the signals, he then made me remove my router and boot up in safe mode... Almost the exact same speed 421kbps. He then said Im very sorry I cannot help you any further since there is no problem with your modem!

As soon as I asked to be put onto a manager he told me he said there seems to be loss on the modem? and has booked an engineer visit he told me there will be a charge if there isnt anything wrong are they even allowed to do that, there obiously is somthing wrong if my internet is extemely slow!

Ive done virus tests and spyware tests removed all the spyware but still having the same probs!

Heres my cable modem stats:

Downstream Lock : Locked
Downstream Channel Id : 1
Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz
Downstream Modulation : QAM64
Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec
Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17
Downstream Receive Power Level : 8.1 dBmV
Downstream SNR : 35.1 dB

Upstream Lock : Locked
Upstream Channel ID : 4
Upstream Frequency : 28784000 Hz
Upstream Modulation : QPSK
Upstream Symbol Rate : 2560 Ksym/sec
Upstream transmit Power Level : 50.5 dBmV

I'm not a tech and so i don't recommend my advice in any sort of way, just a problem i had that i managed to sort in a particular way.

I always got 10mb and one day it dropped to next to nothing. A techie came out and couldn't sort it but said it was very slow, thought it might be my firewall or router. I hadn't changed anything so tried some things myself.

I turned me modem off for a day while i was at work, and when i got back i had a new IP and my 10mb back. Dunno why this might have worked, but it might be a solution for you?

Pass.

Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz ???
For NTL area's shouldn't it be 403000000 or 402750000?
And Telewest areas should be 331000000 or 339000000.

What are the naughty people put on? (Those that cane their connections)

I am on 586750000 Hz .. but i dont 'cane' my connection :)

ex c&w area.

I am no tech guy for ntl .. but isnt that downstream power level about 11db too high ?

Cable Modem Downstream Downstream Lock : Locked Downstream Channel Id : 1 Downstream Frequency : 586750000 Hz Downstream Modulation : QAM64 Downstream Symbol Rate : 6952 Ksym/sec Downstream Interleave Depth : taps12Increment17 Downstream Receive Power Level : -3.9 dBmV Downstream SNR : 34.2 dB

These are my downstream levels. The broadband is working okay for me on 2mb. Day and night. Now on QAM64 the working levels are between +5dBmv and -15dBmv. Now Toilet-Duck looks like your downstream receive power level is to high.Should not be higher than +5dBmv. Yours is +8. That might be a problem.

Not too sure if you agree'd with me or disagree'd there ;)

I was told by an installer once that about -6 is nice, but like yours mine is running at about -3.9,, so i took his +8 and reduced it to -3.. == 11db too high lol

You can get hold of a 10db attenuator on ebay for 99p, might be worth stumping up to test if like myself you dont want the hastle of waitihg for an engineer.

My Power Level is 50.5 dBmV so whats that mean ?

You're probably looking at your upstream power level. 50.5 on the upstream is fine =-)

As for Duck:
Power levels depend on what type of modem you have and what QAM you're on. (I don't know how they differ between NTL and Telewest) but 11 is getting high, but shouldn't cause you any major problems like you're getting. Ring VM, maybe you might get someone who knows what they are doing! :-)

Actually mines been running at different downstream power receive dBmv levels over the last couple of weeks. Been as high as -7.2 and down to what it is now.All well within specs of course.:)

Well mine ran at about -2 forever, then got problems whern it went into positive, 3db attenuator from an engineer and back to -3.whatever and its all good again.

I just post on experience :)

Either way, 8db is too high anyways :D

your Downstream Receive Power Level is 50.5 db ?

I think that must be upstream transmit power level. Mine is 54.Which is within range.

FUD central :|

Ducl: the power is fine, downstream SNR is fine, upstream transmit is fine, the frequency is fine for an Ex-CoCo area, there is no 'naughty people' frequency they are policed by IP level shaping at the CMTS itself.

Now onto actually trying to fix this issue. The guy said he did something to your connection, the only thing he might have done I guess is mess with your upstream.

Questions: is it always bad or does it improve at off-peak times? Have you tried using a proxy or downloading from a newsgroup to see if that's ok. How are the pings, is there packet loss?

It could be poor upstream SNR causing packet loss and in turn slow performance. It could be congestion. It could be a munted modem in which case you should have a replacement arranged by tech support.

Oh and having packet loss to the modem diagnosed and booking you an engineer then threatening to charge you if there's nothing wrong is complete and utter BS. It's him diagnosing you need the engineer and if he's wrong that's his problem not yours.

For some reason my modem will no longer allow me to use 331000000, it just forces it to 339000000. I suspect this is why my connection is totally balls at the moment, because 331 has broken and is kicking everyone on to 339.

How it used to be when 331 worked:

How it has been for the last 3 months on 339:

How are you seeing all this tech info ? do the NTL 250s have a tech page somwhere ?
