Hello!

Which is better? :)
I have 10mbit.

I have the choice to pick what I want.
IE. I can keep my old modem if i like, or get the latest...

I get POOR speeds most of the time on my 10mbit service.
Im connected over ethernet, does anyone think ill have better service?

:)

:welcome: to the forum!

The NTL 250 should be better... How do you get a choice of which modem to have? I thought you get whatever modem the engineer has in his van...?

You do only get what is in the van but the odds of him having an old SB modem is slim and they probably don't carry that one anymore lol

Yeah I didn't think they carried Motorola ones either but I thought they still give out NTL 100, 120, 200...

With the speed upgrades they may be trying to carry relevant stock with them. Odds are though that there will be a 250 on the van.

True. :)

we do not fit the motorolas no more or the 100 or 120 we only fit the 250 now as the older ones can not copy with the 10 meg connection so as i say we only carry the 250 ones now but different areas are different

Either will be fine by the way. Motorola 5100 is the 'better' of the two being a brand name rather than a generic rebadge but both will be quite acceptable.

I don't think it makes much difference if its a brand name or not. According to chetnet, the Motorola isn't capable of the 10Mb service and the NTL 250 is capable of it...

My SB4100 is capable of 10Mbit

Uhmm...no, the ex-ntl network hasn't offered that modem ever, they did the SB3100 and the SB4100.

The ex-TW network did have that modem (SB5100), but I am uncertain if they can utulize the ntl 250 modem.

The other posters are right, you can only get what the engineer has on the van.

All Motorola modems (SB4100, 4200, 5100 AND 5101E) can cope with 10mb. It's only the SB3100 that can't :)

I think you will find that the SB4100 can not handle 10 meg as the ethernet connection on it is a 10 base T. Therefore you will only get around 8meg instead of the full 10 meg

WRONG!

Check your facts please. The SB4100 supports 10Base and 100Base, and the 100Base light on my modem is currently on.

You can review the basic specs here (http://broadband.motorola.com/noflash/sb4100.html).

You won't get an SB4100 from Virgin Media anymore, at best you'll get the ntl 250. Nothing wrong with it, handles 10Mb with aplomb.

My dad has one, nice compact unit. I believe now there is a 255 model badged for VM, but not too sure.

Yep you're correct, It's only the Motorola 3100 that doesn't support 10Mb. :)

And yes, Virgin Media now have the VM 255 modem which is basically the same as the NTL 250 but without a USB port...

I assume is badged in the VM livery also?

Nikesh

I'm afraid you don't get a choice, but you would probably get the NTL 250 which is the best one...
