Was wondering why my internet was slower, so checked my modem config file and did say my down speed was 10mb and upload at 512k.

So did speed tests on many different servers and everyone reported my down speed at around 4.8mb and upload at 384k , here is the NTL/Virgin speed test, ping speed is bloody terrible

1st 512K took 907 ms = 564.5 KB/sec, approx 4651 Kbps, 4.54 Mbps
2nd 512K took 893 ms = 573.3 KB/sec, approx 4724 Kbps, 4.61 Mbps
3rd 512K took 875 ms = 585.1 KB/sec, approx 4821 Kbps, 4.71 Mbps
4th 512K took 907 ms = 564.5 KB/sec, approx 4651 Kbps, 4.54 Mbps

Overall Average Speed = approx 4712 Kbps, 4.6 Mbps

I live in Neath if anyone was interested.

Also, anyone near Neath on 10mb having similar slowdowns

Sorry for the late reply, my modem is the blue 250 one, my OS is Vista Ultimate x64 and my modem runs through my Belkin wireless router to my PC.

So far my internet has been staying at a steady 10mb down and 512k up. Currently downloading a 3.6gb Linux distro as a big speed test and so far is downloading at a very steady 1.16mb a sec :D (11pm as I post this)

Hopefully that drop in speed may have been small glitch somewhere. :)

btw i wud advise you to limit downloads at 1 mb/s as vm dont monitor usage it does auto-cap you if you max out your conn for say 2 hours (not sure of actual length either 1 or 2 hours)

Ok, after downloading 2gb out of 3.6gb my downloaded jumped straight to 555kb a sec, paused the downloaded, did a speed test and it seems I have been again capped to around 5mb speeds. This is bloody annoying

What speed test is this? I have seen many people here quoting figures from it but I don't know where they get it from.

It's at the top of each page on this forum, marked 'Speed Test'.

:D

Where is the speed test hosted? Is it within the VM network? Really there should be 2 speed tests for more accurate results. One on the telewest network side and one on the NTL network.
Looks like you might be being capped tho. Ya could always just ring up and ask if you are in an area that is being capped?

It seems if I download a certain amount of data and I reach a limit my speed is automatically cut to 4/5mb for a few hours then it's back up to 10mb. I did the speed test Via NTL/Virgin simple speed test and speedtest.net, both give identical results.

Once I'm backup to 10mb, both speed tests report my speed at roughly 9.8mb.

Virgin should be sued for calling it an unlimited service. Never had this capping when NTL was in charge

Why should they be sued, it is unlimited, you can still d/l, just takes a bit longer!

Others have to use the network too. Plus it is sold as upto... :disturbd:

people like to use the word "sue" a lot dont they :)
ur service is unlimited (with in the terms) its just a little slower sometimes.
perhaps if you wasnt busy downloading everything you could all day long virgin wouldnt have to limit speed.
