O.K. I must be one of the few on this forum.
I went over to 10 meg from 4 earlier this morning.
Been doing speed tests through the day and it hasn't dropped below 9.7 download all day , averaging .5 upload consistently.
I'm in S.W. Manchester going through an Ethernet modem.
To be honest I've been with NTL for years and have NEVER had any problems with anyone over any problems ever, and I've had a few. Sometimes they have been of my own making but their people sorted them out.
Just ordered V+ in two weeks time , I'm touching wood as I type.............

Same here too, what you'll find is that most people are happy with their service but just don't shout about it. Most people will only make a fuss if its causing a problem. Nowadays we see our internet as a utility grade service, and you wouldnt ring your water/electric provider and thank them for keeping your taps running and your lights on.

Overall i think Telewest/Virgin are a very good provider.

Hey Hughes - Stretford here.

I moved over to the 10mb from 4mb on Monday and I'm very impressed

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/02/58.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

I've been with ntl for 6 years now and the BB has only let me down a couple of times - the most was for nearly two hours but that was it.

Maybe we are lucky in Manchester?

Spanky, I see you must be an ex-NTL customer with 512kbs upload!!!

Im an ex-Telewest and we still have 384kbs upload, grrr:mad:

Cant wait for 1mb, when and if it ever comes....

What speed are you supposed to be on John?

2mb, 4mb or 10mb? Or is it dial up?

How are you connected? Which modem?

John1
23-02-2007, 17:13
What speed are you supposed to be on John?

Hi, i had thought i was supposed to be on 10 megs, but now i'm not sure.
So i looked through all the NTL bits of paper i could find, but none gave
me a clue.
I suppose the monthly price is a good a guide as any, i pay £17:99 p/mth
which i think is the fee for 10 megs.
But even if its the fee for 4 megs it is still a bit short.

How are you connected? Which modem?

PC - router - cable modem - fibreoptics sensor - glassfibre cabling in street

The "modem" is an 'ntl:home Broadband Internet' and its a silver colour.
its about 5 inches wide, about an inch and a quarter high,
about seven inches long(deep).
The router is a standard "Mentor"
The setup has been fine, with good speeds up until very recently.
I think that setup is pretty standard.

Any suggestions to improve the speeds will be gratefully received,
Cheers, John :)

---------- Post added at 17:13 ---------- Previous post was at 16:48 ----------

some slight improvement, maybe its just a busy time.
And i think ive sussed how to post it here ....

£17.99 = 2mb
£25 = 4mb
£35 = 10mb

Seems you may be on 2mb??? Id give them a phone see what they say.

John1
23-02-2007, 18:03
Thanks Numenor,
there probably is something in all this paperwork which would tell me
that, but i couldn't find it.

So, i'm on 2 megs.
Unfortunately, i dont know how many kb/s are in 2 megs,
my guess would be 2000, but i know it doesn't always work like that.
So should those two numbers each be approaching 2000 ... ?
or is that too simplistic ...

And 'Latency', well looks like middle two figure numbers are ok.
So i'm not doing well there either.

John :)

People Talk Rubbish - Cable Broadband Is Good/average. There No Problems With It Anyway That Make It Worse Than Competition Unlike The Tv. I Have 10 Meg And It Hovers About The 9 Meg Easily

So the people who are having issues or are in areas where there's been long term congestion and dodgy performance are lying huh?

Cable is very regional. Some areas are excellent all the time, other areas are poor all / most of the time.

Clearly the areas that are excellent / good are far more common than those which are poor else VM wouldn't be in business, but this certainly does NOT mean that people complaining about performance are talking rubbish.

Oh and learn to punctuate, you don't capitalise every word, primary school level English :(

John1
24-02-2007, 02:45
I don't think freakfunk is capitalising his words deliberately, all of
his posts are like that. I have seen this before, i think it might be
a setting on his machine.
He probably doesn't know how to turn it off or he doesn't care.
He may not realise how foolish it looks.

As to his comments about the reliability of cable broadband, we don't
have TV internet at any kind of market share that could put it into
competition with cable broadband.
Maybe he is in another country which has widespread TV internet use.
Although i can't think of one off-hand.

His post makes little sense to me anyway.
If someone knows what he means maybe they will let us know.

I tried ringing V.M. but i got such a long wait with accompanying
musack that i had to hang up after a while. I am pretty easy-going
usually, but that was really doing my head in. Maybe its a deliberate
ploy to reduce their workload.

John :)

John1 you need to get onto tech support about your connection.
Your ping levels for a local server are a joke, 360ms is more like a ping for the eastern USA than for a local one.

Been on it since last Thursday - and relatively consistent. This is current. Usually this type of speed - once it's fallen to the low 8000's

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/02/43.png (http://www.speedtest.net)

Moved from 4mg - I have to say I haven't really noticed a huge difference with page loading speeds, but did note that a few things I downloaded were much faster. When it went from 2-4 mg I did notice a change in page loading times before I realised they'd upgraded me.

As I was seeding a finished bit-torrent file, I thought I'd run the speed test at the same time and these are the results I got (see above), bit-torrent was seeding the file at 58 - 62KB/s.

I've never really had any connection issues, etc with NTL having been with them for 2+ years, even when there were problems, the guys / women at the indian call centres took care of the problem/s very quickly and they are extremely helpful everytime.

-------

How do you get the image to be displayed here

Run the speed test at Speedtest.net and then once its completed, a sort of box will appear saying "Share your results" and then where it says "Forum link (for most forums)" click on the "Copy" button and then paste the copied code into the reply box and your done.

Hi,
My speed test results are still pretty poor :

***************
https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/02/33.png (http://www.speedtest.net)
***************

I have been in touch with V.Media by phone, the assistant at technical
support said that there did seem to be a problem, and he had filled
out a form for my service signal to be increased.
I have no idea what that means, but he said it would take about a week.

I also asked him what the 2megs are in kilobytes, he told me that two
megs broadband is 200 kbs. So half an hour on the phone at local rates
was not a complete loss, i have learned that 2megs is 200kbs.

I am looking forward to seeing my speed test results improve soon.
We shall see.

Regards, John :)

It's a shame he didn't even get that right ;) 2M should be good for 256kB/s 'gross' or 240kB/s or so 'net' after overheads.

Before my department (Network Surveillance in Teesside) was made redundant last November & the role transferred to Ex Telewest in Albert Dock I used to monitor the network in Luton/Beds/Milton Keynes/Scotland/Wales & N Ireland on the SMS billing system.

On a good day the Luton/Beds area would have between 10 - 20 network faults (service outages), on a bad day between 30 - 40! In the summer months/thunderstorms the network literally fell over on a daily basis!:Yikes:

The Luton/Beds area is particularly bad for freezing pics/intermittent & poor BB connection, because..*deep breath*..the HFC network in that area is poor at best and in dire need of a serious upgrade. Network Techs/Service Techs/Service Managers all know this, but their hands are tied.

Instead of splashing out on flash tv adverts Mr Branson should be laying out for major network equipment upgrades on the worst parts of the network!

20 meg trials ... ??
TWENTY MEG TRIALS ... !!

You what ??

We used to have to ring up the main computer on the telephone,
then poke the reciever into a sorta cradle so it could connect,
and we wos lucky if we could get 20 bits per minute.

And you tell that to the young folks today,
with their hoodies pulled down over their ears,
and their trouser braces dangling round their ankles,
and they just don't believe you ...

The Luton/Beds area is particularly bad for freezing pics/intermittent & poor BB connection, because..*deep breath*..the HFC network in that area is poor at best and in dire need of a serious upgrade. Network Techs/Service Techs/Service Managers all know this, but their hands are tied.

Im in Hertfordshire and routed through Luton, and have had 3 yrs of fabulous service, my 10meg is full speed 24/7 or as good as.
Is it just Bedfordshire which is soo bad? what sort of state are the UBRs in at Luton? as ive never really had any problems.

But, if you are on the 20mb trial, why are you only getting just over 10mb connection??????

And your upload seems to be at about 768kb/s. Is this what the 20mb is supposed to be set at, or higher?

All im saying is, if you are on 20mb trial, but only getting just over 10mb, what hope is there for our future!!!!!

ps: Id rather have higher upload than higher download right now tbh.

Must be the traffic shaping , I did that last night , this morning im getting between 1500kb/s - 2000 kb/s, they must be shaping it down to 10 meg lol. And yes the upload for the trial is 768kb/s. I wanted more upload as opposed to download speed, but the general browsing difference makes me want a higher download rate too now

Yeah, right.

I've just seen your post Lynchy, thanks. Yes i too feel that its

Had it all installed today. Phone installation was faultless (touch wood), and the broadband, although I had to phone up to get them to activate my pin, was also faultless. Problem is with the TV, as it's still awaiting activation from Virgin, something to do with the box not being signed for release or something. Ah well.

Anyway. Before the switch, my broadband was running at:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/02/1.png

And now, with my new cable modem, cable line and broadband:

https://www.cableforum.co.uk/images/local/2007/02/2.png

So at the moment, I'm well happy. Downloaded an entire album (2 CD Compilation) in under twenty mins, which is great. Can't wait to test it out on some private torrents.

Still awaiting TV activation though, the one in my room is working, but the PVR downstairs isn't. Ah well, nearly all is well. Happy with my speed.

I would actually guesstimate more that there wasn't enough bandwidth there to give you more than 10Mbit or so and now that usage in the area is lower (as it is in the morning) there's more bandwidth free for you to use.

The fact that you can't get over 16M or so and suggest your speeds are bouncing around even in the morning doesn't fill me with joy, however this is what the future has to hold on 20Mbit services over 38Mbit pipes ;)

Hi StuartC,

Yes, of course.
I should have said 'maybe i'll ring them again'
i have rung them and the operative told me he would make a report.
He told me it would take about a week, i think its been about a week.

Got a bit of a cold at the moment, if i feel better later, i'll
ring them again. Its an 0845 number, which i think means charged at
local rates.
Just as well, last time i rang them i was on the phone for half an
hour.

If you are on Cable, then the number for faults (from an NTL line anyway) is 150, and is free.

Hi,

Didn't get through to V.Media,
I will try again tomorrow.

These are about my best results yet.
I am using an 'Aries' PC running 2000 pro,
previously i was using a 'Fujitsu' PC with 98se.

I would not have though that would make any difference
to the speed of my signal through the internet ...
but what do i know ?

Now i am wondering if i should try the USB instead of the
Ethernet port. I wouldn't think that would make any difference
either ... but maybe i should check.

Hi Nevermind1994,

I rang V.Media (again) a little while ago, after a few checks the guy
said they would ring me back.
I actually did not think that would help, but when they rang back,
the guy said that my modem was faulty.
I asked how did he know, and he said they can test it from their end.

So there it is. Modem faulty.
He said someone will call round to replace it between 12noon and 6pm
on Wed-28th.
I thanked him very much, and look forward to my new modem.

So although my connection is still slow, i am now a happy bunny.
I will of course be back to say how it worked out after the 28th.

Cheers, John :)

Still not perfect, but may be due to congestion in your area, can you try that test early morning? Or very late at night to see if you hit anywhere near 2048 kb/s down or 368kb/s up ?

Speedtest.net seems to get used a lot, which would result in it being slower.

In fact, i'll do you a comparison right now.
My 10Mb line (Subject to varying speeds :( )

Virgin Media/Ntl called today to install a SACM. I have been on 4Meg BB through Samsung STB for a good while now but saw the advert for the VIP package, that is supposed to be £85.00 for everything. One Vplus box, one V box, phone & 10 meg BB. As I already have everything but 10Meg BB I arranged for them to install a SACM to give me the VIP package, a saving of between £15.00 & £30.00 on my current bills. Install went OK but when I phoned for a PIN number I was told that as I was having a new SACM I would need a new account number to generate the PIN to register the modem. After a couple of hours and several phone calls I eventually abandoned the setup CD and did a manual configuration with a little help from tech support. Modem is now working but if this is 10meg service I think I will go back to dial up.:(

Has anyone else who has migrated from an STB to SACM had to have a new account number?

I'm guessing they've screwed up and put you on 2mbit. Check your config file here, http://192.168.100.1/ username/password both root.

Expect to see one of these 3 in Operation Config.

10mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 10240000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 512000

4mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 4096000 bps
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 400000 bps

2mbit
Maximum Downstream Data Rate : 2048000
Maximum Upstream Data Rate : 200000

One other problem is that I cannot get past the login screen for my wirelss router either now. Never altered it from default Admin/blank but it will not accept that. D-Link 2XR.

Try a reset of the router.

Try a reset of the router.

Tried that twice, unplugged, pressed the little button at the back to no avail.

Will try and get the 10meg, or lack of sorted first, router is working but I wanted to map a port. ;)

Make sure you haven't changed your default proxy if you're on one, as this could stop you getting into the router config. This is what happened to me but i was also not able to get into the modem config.

Not altered any settings for a while, router has worked perfectly for over 12 months now.

On another tack, why could they not just add the SACM to my existing account?

I've got the same, new SACM on new account number and new email addresses, and for some odd reason the SACM now reckons I'm on 2 meg!!

speed tests are a waste of time,i measure my speed when doing a download or an upload, there are too many variables on speed test sites :erm:

Will this work for all modems. I have a friend who was supposedly upgraded to the 10 Meg BB service last week. He seems to be getting just under 4 Meg on speed tests. When he tries that link above he says he cannot see a Login option. He already had a SACM, a Surfboard SB3100. how can he check his config file?

TIA, Jim.

He can't with that modem and that's the same as my old modem so he needs to get it changed and then he stands a chance on getting 10mbit.

Thanks for that, I have already told him that I suspect his modem is not up to snuff.

I could get 6mbit with the Motorola SB3100 but i couldn't browse at all when i was downloading at that speed from newsgroups. Changing it to an NTL:250 made my speed max out at 10mbit. :)
