I've had this modem since the day I joined Broadband whenever it first opened in NTL. I think. Anyways, I've got this modem:

Problem is: I've just recently joined the VIP Pack from Virgin, 10mb came the day we ordered. :tu: Fantastic, I though. :erm: The problem seems to be that the connection is dieing every couple of mins. Like it drops down and goes up. From 9225 kbps to 0023 kbps and back up. Now, I think it's the modem. I've got it connected to router and I know its not the router as I just joined up the modem to my computer and it seems to have that stupid problem!

I was wondering maybe I could get a new modem perhaps? The enginner is coming out on the 21st Feb I think and hes putting in my new V+ Box. Would the enginner be kind enough to give me a new modem or will I have to ring up before hand?

I really like NTL. It's a great company, I remember when it was Cable:Tel. And, I don't want to leave them, if there internet service is like this.

P.S - Could I ask for the new Virgin modem too? :)

Not sure the 120, which that one looks like (like mine) is compatible with 10 Mb. I think maybe you should contact NTL/VM and say you're having problems with the connection dropping out since the speed upgrade.

The tech you're having might just be a TV tech and not have the modem to install, nor the expertise to do so. They need registering on your account.

No, the install tech that's coming out would not be able to swap the modem unfortunately - it would have to be done instead by a faults tech. I would certainly hedge my bets though that its to do with the modem, as it is known that some of the older ambit modem's (probably yours included) cannot handle the 10Mb service.

Ring up tech support and explain to them that you've upgraded your service and you don't think your modem can handle it - they should be able to book a fault tech to go out and do a swap.

Thanks for that guys. Yeah, I think I will. It's quite annoying.

If its the ntlhome:120 it can handle 10mb with a firmware upgrade, if its the 200 it wont need a firmware upgrade

I have exactly the same kind of problem - 10Mb on a NTL:Home 100 modem.
After reading around on the forum, discovered that the modems cant handle 10Mb, So phoned up VM and told the lady on the phone my 'research' i had done into the modems ....she didnt even question it or anything and agreed to send an engineer round and at the same time got offered a nice new deal :D.

As i understand it, the modems are their property and if your paying for a service which their property cant handle, which is a sub-standard service then your entitled to a modem that can handle 10Mb

I doubt you'll get a virgin modem. You'll probably get a reconditioned one that's been around the block a few times

That is the NTL 100 modem I believe.
They can't handle 10mb so you would be best to give them a call, explain you are on your new speed, and get them to send you a new one.

Just checked the bottom of my modem and it says NTL:Home 100, I'm guessing that's the one that doesn't let you have 10MB? :erm:

i have an ntl:120 modem, also just been upgraded to the vip package, and my connection regularly drops out and rebooting the pc and modem is the only way to get it back up again...is this a fault with the modem?

Not at all, you must have got someone that wanted to get you off the phone quickly, call back

That modem will not do 10MB

Well, my mother doesn't believe me. She thinks its the Xbox but, its not. It's the NTL, I know as I spend more bloddy time on this than the Xbox! GRR!
