Have a go at Wolfbane's Digital TV reception predictor. It will tell you what sort of aerial you should have for Freeview.

I have to say though, unless you live right underneath your transmitter, Freeview signals are generally not strong enough for set-top aerials yet. This won't improve until they switch off the analogue and are able to increase digital transmitter power.

You say that, but I can get all channels on that Telecam, in NE Notts (NG4) off Belmont transmitter near Grimsby, fifty miles away, with the output split between the freeview box and my PC.

Should be OK. It's not transferred to the post very well though - the first part of the postcode should be enough for us to look ourselves.

i see that now
LE4 5QD
LE4 would have sufficed. Yeah, you should be fine, Waltham is pretty close.

On the contrary, the predictor suggests an amplified extra high-gain aerial, so I would have thought based on that that the transmitter is operating at very low power and an indoor aerial would be out of the question.

Well Belmont's listed as distant here (NG4) and I can pick everything up.
Unless there's any terrain blocking it, which between Leicester and Waltham there isn't much, then distance should be no issue.
That aerial is only a tenner anyway.

Distance isn't the only consideration. You have to account for the power of the transmitter as well.

Well i bought the aerial suggested and it picks up most chaannell but struggles with BBC more than any other, quite impressed by this aerial for 9.99
I just got freeview via a pacific PSTB1 box and I had some problems with image breaking on itv and bbc channels, but moving the box from the bottom of the cabinet to on top of the tv solved the problem :)
I forgot to mention that I use a cheap indoor aerial and i'm insight of winter hill.

Get a booster then. This is good for 3.99, cost me about 15 and well worth it. http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5344228.htm

I know all that, but Waltham reaches up into the fringes of the Peak District so someone in a stone's throw (Leicester) should be OK.
That said, there's a massive hill here so I can only get Belmont which is further, and Yorkshire not Central. Still, i know all the gossip as far as the yorkshire inbreds can see it lol.

Generally, it's better to use common sense, set the right AGL and look at the figures. :)
