Anyone care to give their favourite aria and explain why? Or is everyone on this forum only interested in things with tits, wheels or FPS/RPG :D

Bit of tricky one now I come to think :erm: Vissi d'arte, La mamma morta, Vesti la guibba, and O mio babbino caro are all contenders. Queen of the Night's aria too - awesome. I think it would be Vesti la guibba though - I can kind of relate to being happy on the outside whilst being sad in the inside.

:D I listen to a wide variety of music - my collection spans from Callas to Leftfield via Scratch Perry. Something in it for everyone. Music makes life a little easier. I do love a good aria, hence this thread, which has kinda proved I sail alone :erm:

There's another one I like but I don't know what it's called - my Mum's the opera buff so I'll have to ask her what it's called.
I've seen loads of G&S at the Buxton Opera House every year at the G&S Festival - some of that's not too bad! :)

True, though the word does tend to be most closely associated with opera. The tragi-comic "Somewhere That's Green" from Little Shop of Horrors is an aria. I'm sure Ellen Green will appeal to some forum members :naughty:

Looking for things, other than operas, that contain arias:

Off the top of my head: Oratorios, Passions, Masses, Cantatas, blah struggling *wikipedia* (Wikipedia is crap may have to do some research and add to the article) have been around since C14 and opera was around about 400 yrs after that :( and they don't even have to be vocal!

Can anybody explain, in simple English, what an Aria is?

Basically, it's a vocal solo in an opera (I think). I'm sure NFFC will correct me.

Already have! For the purposes of this thread it's any solo song from an opera or musical - Nessun Dorma is probably the best known.

It's a concerted vocal song (with instruments) in anything like opera/oratorio etc as I listed! Like Nessun Dorma as has been said.

Vesti la guibba can be listened to here:

It's badly sung but it'll do. You may recognise it from the movie The Untouchables - De Niro's Capone weaps at this aria.
