Disconnection on IP renewal?

Recently I have been getting cut off once a day at random times. My pc is always on as is IRC and when i come to it there is no connection, Either I have to reset my PC or disable and enable my ethernet adapter, When I clicked repair it came out with something of the lines of "failed to renew IP, contact your ISP" It reconnected anyway and now I can use it again. Do you think it is my ethernet card? because it seems fine to me or maybe a problem when trying to renew my IP from NTL, although when i do get reconnected I still have the same IP address.

Do you have the MSBlast virus or any variants, they can cause seemingly a lose of connection.

I have been getting this a lot on my router, have to manually release/renew to get a net connection when I get home.
