hi if i put a new network card in my computer will the ip be the same as old one or will i have a new one ?

The odds are that you would receive a new IP as the MAC address of the NIC would change.

you could clone the mac address of the old nic onto the new one and then it would keep the same ip.

First use ipconfig /all on the old nic to find the physical address. make a note of this.

Then install the new nic and go to device manager, nic properties and advanced. From here there is an option to specify the mac address (often called physical address/ adaptor address/ network id....). Pop the mac you got from ipconfig on the old card here and you should keep the same ip :)

Make sure you don't put the dashes in, and bear in mind that not all network drivers actually allow this.

cheers all do i have to release the ip then put nwew card in and plug the modem in or do i just unplug modem put new card in and then plug modem in to new card ?

should be just a case of rebooting the modem when you switch connections

i'm not sure if telewest require you to register the mac address with them though :erm:

Telewest don't require MAC address registering any more.
