I need to cool my bedroom during the summer as it also doubles as my office, Air Conditioners are expensive, but I know they work.. but there is a lot of talk about cheaper evaporative air coolers, has anyone got one of these tried them, and do they know how well they work.

True Air Conditioning addresses temperature and humidity It can include heating as well as cooling.

Air cooling, is exactly that. Most portable units will only be coolers.

The evaporative coolers due sort of work, but are much less efficient and suited only to small rooms. The one that I saw in operation was fairly pathetic. Look on the box to see what power consumption relative to cooling they offer. The advantage though is that they are standalone, and just need a plug. Any aircon unit will need at least a hole in a window or wall to dangle the exhaust hose out of.

Oh and think of the noise that the unit might create.

Nah, its a true air conditioner. You can tell because it has a BTU rating. Anything with a BTU rating will adjust the temperature of the room. The air coolers, which are just fans, push air around the room, making it feel cooler, without altering the temp.

Look into hiring one for the summer months, may work out cheaper, you never know.

Air coolers work by blowing air across cool water. The problem with this is you can end up with a very damp feeling room. I'd go the whole hog and buy a proper air-conditioning unit if I was you.
