View Full Version : Why is ironing so hard?

Where's a woman when you need one?

Need a shirt to go out in tonight, trouble being they're all creased (Mother persists in putting em in a basket so they get all scrunched up at the bottom)... and and she's gone out... leaving me to iron my own shirt.

Anyway, why the hell is ironing so hard? and how the hell does she get the shirts so uncreased? I've spent about 30 minutes trying my best, I've got majority of the back and the front done but the top part of the shirt just below the coller, and the arms (short sleeved) just take the pee... I can't get to em without ironing over something else and putting another crease in :(

I hate it :(

Ahhh, well maybe it is about time you learnt how to, you need lots of steam and press quite hard and then that should get the creases out. I thought creases were all the craze at the moment??

The top part still goes screwy :(

As for steam, I think this iron was designed to be put on a stove ;) It's about 90 years old :(

Jeez, when I was 13 my mother taught me to use the washing machine, the tumble dryer and then the Iron all in one afternoon!!!

:D

Start with the collar, then flip it over and do the shoulder bit, then the front side, then the back and the other side and finally the arms and cuffs.

Take your time and be patient and as Allie said use plenty of steam you will be looking tip top in no time!!!

Well it'l have to do now, looks OK... I'l just have to stand against a wall so no one can see the back of my shirt :D

Glad the trousers were easy :p:

After years of struggling, I treated myself to a steam press - about twice the price of a good iron - but by far the best household gadget I have ever bought. All my ironing is done in about a quarter of the time and looks twice as good. 100 pounds of pressure at the touch of a finger aaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!

Put a very slightly damp cloth (tea towels are good) between iron and shirt, the extra steam generated will help the creases come out.

Trousers? I HATE ironing trousers!!!! Shirts are a doddle though - I pity my sister who has 42+ to iron in a week! :Yikes:

Trousers are the easiest!!!

I had to have knife edge creases whilst in the Air Cadets so I can do those easy peasy...

:D

(sorry to sound like a smart @rse)

Hmmm..... The problem is that I keep ending up with tramlines.

These modern fabrics don't seem to sit still as nicely as the good old grey ATC trousers did.

I have to conceed that the old ATC trousers were quite easy to do...

NP. If it's been screwed up in a bin it's difficult to get enough steam out on any iron to get it looking nice again.

Ironing through a slightly damp cloth generates a whole load of steam which relaxes the fibres enough for you to iron the creases out.

If you have a tumble drier then get the clothes out the minute they have finished drying - and don't over dry them either. Then carefully fold them (if they require ironing) and iron them as soon as possible, or if you are lucky, you might be able to hang them up straight away without the need for the iron! (That's what I do anyway.)

I have a motto.NEVER,EVER IRON ANYTHING. :tu:

Just buy a drier and whisk the clothes out just when the drier finishes and hang your clothes up.That way you never have to iron anything. ;)

IF anyone wants anything ironing I give them the iron and show them where the ironing board is(after removing the cobwebs).Works everytime. ;)

And before anyone disparges my ironing I'm a demon ironer.I was started on it when I was about 10 by my mother and am pretty good at it.I just don't like doing it anymore.Life is too damned short. :)

how you divide it all up... is up to you ;)

mrs gaz purchased one of those 'press' type ironing boards, recently - a few shirts & a pair of trousers while she is practicing, won't hurt ;)

we don't iron sheets, pillows, pants, socks, tea towels, duvet covers, vests, etc , though ;)

<edit> meanwhile a pair of black trousers from 'florence & fred' was £12 - if I paid to have them cleaned, and ironed, would it be much less :erm:

Just looking on the BBC website and found this! (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/4530339.stm). So you can iron as Prince Harry does (allegedly!) ;)

I refuse to iron trousers - you can get 'em so cheap now that I basically wear them until even I have to accept that they're creased (which, oddly, is usually about 4 weeks after Mrs Nug has started moaning about them) and then I just buy a new pair (I would like to point out that they do det washed during this period :p: )

As for shirts, I iron my own but, when it comes to the annoying shoulder-y bit - well, I'm 6' 5", so no-one sees that bit anyway :D

Ironings like making love to a beautifull woman... ops swiss toni moment there....

My advice is to just dmap everything down, if it refuses to iron, damping it down will force the creases out, but makes ironing a little longer...

I was fortunate to be taught how to iron, beore I moved out, but i will admit to hating it..
