It makes me feel uncomfortable, and a little disgusted, when you discuss women as objects for pleasure. Today, at work, I've had to suffer lurid tales of messy anal sex and general promiscuity; how difficult it is to maintain several "birds"; techniques for dumping and duping "birds"; and drunken incidents resulting in the discovery, the following morning, that she "looks like a horse". There's also the passing round of men's magazines - the ones that border on porn mags and don't have too many words over 5 letters long. No one mentions trips to the GUM clinic though.

How do you women put up with it?

What were you doing listening in on other people's conversations? :P

Seriously though, did you try saying "lads please, some of us are trying to work here?"

Well I'm a man so they assume I'm straight. Sometimes I wish gay men were a different colour - say, deep pink ;) "What do you think to the tits on that". Er, yes - lovely :erm:

Seriously though, did you try saying "lads please, some of us are trying to work here?"
They vary in age from 18 to 30+, so not really lads - that's part of the annoyance. I mean - 21+ and you're a grown up.

I suspect that many do much the same :(
Possibly, yes, but I think it's a response to the way men have behaved towards them for many years.

I have never liked the male 'banter' thing--false bravado really and cringingly embarrassing to listen to :disturbd:
Agree, though I think some of it is true - which I find worrying really. If you're that sexually active, you should be visiting the GUM clinic once a month. Some of them haven't ever visited. Deeply worrying.

They do. I have worked in a mostly female office (the boss and I were the only males in a staff of 10). The stuff some of the women came out with makes the stuff my male friends come out with pale in comparison.

No - I know women can be "ladish" too, but like I said, I think the behaviour has developed in response to how men treat them.

ive been pretty shocked by a few conversations by men in the past about women, even the nicest and most religious of men have dropped some clangers, it makes me wonder how these people get women in the first place, it must be the apparent charm and 'bad boy' image i guess...

i had a simaler incident just a couple of days ago with someone, he suggested in a sexual manner that i make the 'sexually overtoned' approach to instigating a sexual episode.....the way in which he said it was quite shocking......what was equally as shocking was that his advice was based with a complete racial bias, if it was someone of ethnic origin then i would not have got that advice.

there is me thinking wtf about the whole conversation..... some people make me sick, most men do!

yes im a man but seriously the things i have heard and seen it makes my blood boil, multiple patners, multiple phone handsets/sim cards......

:disturbd: :Yikes: maybe if i turn nasty ill get a women

you could always fight fire with fire... the draughtsmen where i used to work had *cough* 'calenders' up all over the place.

One of the more confrontational women decided that pictures of the french rugby team wearing nothing but strategically placed rugby balls would help to compensate... :Yikes: it certainly shut them up for a while!

i can understand it may not be what you want to do, or indeed work in this situation, but it might be worth a try :)

Pretty much - yeah - though I would expect the exact reasoning to be more complex. I think there are various sociological factors at work, but yes - women are taking the lead from men.

I wouldn't worry about it, many guys who I have had to work in the past have been like those you describe.. as far as I can tell, they spend most of their lives being really lonely, and making up stories about their 'sexploits' to impress people:dozey:

I subtly moved my way out of the group of 'the lads' where I used to work by scaring the hell out of them on a regular basis.. I used to wear a big (optional) apron that basically looked like a skirt, and I went around curtesying to people here and there.. the lads soon stopped talking to me about 'some fit bird they pulled' :D

Although, on the other hand, if one of them does try and tell you stories like those you describe, it may mean they like you and are trying to impress you. Which may or may not be a good thing, lol....

Which, IMO, if true makes women worse than men. We tend to be a bit neanderthal, it's not too far from our true nature. That's not in any way justifying the behaviour btw.

However for a species to consciously decide to act that way when it is not usually in their nature is a much more negative trait, again in my opinion.

Rather than pull us up to their level, they're allowing themselves to be dragged down to ours.

Going back to the original point, although I'm a regular reader of Nuts and FHM, I find the behaviour you describe to be somewhat annoying, just as I find over-campness to be equally irritating. I can't really put up with macho or camp to be honest, so anything near the centre of that spectrum is preferrable.

Perhaps a kind mod can change the thread title to 'Man'

I've never been good at faking straight, so I rely on their ignorance to keep me safe. Where I work, there is only one woman - I've no idea how she's survived. It's hardly suprising women don't work in our team - the lad culture is too strong.

I think many of their stories are true, rather than just being tall tales. I'm sure they do lie, and I'm sure they embelish the truth, but I do believe many sleep around and have 2 or 3 girlfriends.

Rather than pull us up to their level, they're allowing themselves to be dragged down to ours.
But if, as you say, men are just being natural, then it wouldn't be possible to raise men to the same level as women. I think men are setting the standard, that's all.

I find the behaviour you describe to be somewhat annoying, just as I find over-campness to be equally irritating. I can't really put up with macho or camp to be honest, so anything near the centre of that spectrum is preferrable.
Methinks the filters aren't working too well :) Camp annoys me too - which I guess many will find surprising given that I'm gay. But the thread is more about gender rather than sexuality. How many men on here are guilty and posting in defense? Be honest now :D

But if, as you say, men are just being natural, then it wouldn't be possible to raise men to the same level as women. I think men are setting the standard, that's all.

I'm not saying we're being natural, I said it's close to our nature, there's a difference. I think we've moved on from when the 'neanderthal' angle was in vogue. Well, some of us anyway.....

And I notice it's only 'men setting the standard' when we're doing something wrong ;)

How many men on here are guilty and posting in defense? Be honest now :D

I can honestly say I'm not aware of being like that!

Stuart
30-04-2005, 23:46
I personally don't like it, but based on my own experience, it's nothing to do with Gender or Sexuality (as I said earlier, I have found women are just as likely to do it). I actually think it is more to do with ego than anything. I think people do it to combat a percieved deficiancy in their lives, and forget that we all mess up our lives in some way or another.

Bragging about women and labeling them in any way is plainly wrong, showing that a person is treating them differently from everyone else.
I would hate hearing myself described in such ways if I was a women.

Some people do indeed have a big lack of respect.

women gossip about men too... but i think alot of media such as magazines and testosterone fueled advertising make things worse for men, the provocative scantily clad women showing off ample assests does not do well for the credibility of women to be taken seriously.

just my opinion there.

to be honest i dont think it exists anymore....when your talking about men fancying women then its a totally diffarent thing, the only thing most men can respect is if they have an ample ding dong or have sexual relations with a good looking women they see, its quite interesting to monitor a human males behaviour when put in a 'gunner' position and have a good looking lady infront of them, how the attitude changes so quickly, hard man, comedian, suave person comes in.....but behind the back of that woman the person is completely diffarent....i dont know how some people can do that.

Sorry, but I don't think it's that.

From what I've heard from female friends, they tend to act "demure" (or, at least more so) when there are men around *because* men can't deal with what women talk about (and talk like!) when they're alone.

Also look at a group of women watching male strippers (eg in The Full Monty), they're not doing it "because blokes do it" they're having a good time and don't have to worry about people going "tsk, disgusting"!

I have heard the same thing, which is what led me to believe it is purely ego that drives people to do that (the idea of appearing to have a better life than your neighbour) , not their gender or sexuality. I certainly don't believe it's a case of one gender trying to out do the other.

Sigh!

People are people whatever their sex. Some are moronic, some are smashing..That's life.

However I can state catergorically I've never heard such talk from either sex in any staff room I've ever been in.It would get you reported pretty damned quick. :erm: I think people who talk about sex in this way in front of the opposite sex need shooting. One is at work presumably to work not gossip. If you can't keep the general conversation within the bounds of common decency in mixed company then you deserve it if the sole male or female makes a formal complaint of sexual harrassment.

There's a whole range of issues at wotk here I guess, not least the portrayal of women in the media which encourages such banal and macho banter. It can also be difficult to challenge such attitudes in the workplace - get labelled as being PC, spoilsport as, after all, "it's only a bit of fun" Yeah right. At the end of the day, it comes down to respect for others, regardless of their gender (or race, religion etc ...) and at times it can seem there's not an awful lot of that about.
